Cultural Funding

The Dutch public funding system for the arts has divided responsibilities between the national government on one side and the provinces and municipalities on the other. Cities mostly fund their local theatres and venues. The national government supports artists and ensembles with various funding programs. Also national institutes like the Opera and various symphonic orchestras get support from central government. Major cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam have their own local funding programs for artists and venues alike. Smaller cities and the 13 provinces provide additional support for other local initiatives in the arts.

The Dutch ministry of foreign affairs has allocated major embassies in Europe with a budget to provide some funding for activities in their area of operation. When organizing concerts with Dutch artists it’s useful to talk to the cultural officer in your local Dutch Embassy.
