TOMASZ STAŃKO NEW YORK QUARTET December Avenue (ECM)

Recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the south
of France in June 2016, „December Avenue” is Tomasz
Stanko’s 12th album released by ECM, and his second
outing with the New York Quartet, following „Wislawa”
(2012). The lineup includes David Virelles on piano and
Gerlad Cleaver on drums, Rueben Rogers replaces Thomas
Morgan on bass. The new CD, built mostly on ballads and
displaying the trumpter’s characteristic wistful sound,
is permated by pensive, dream-like mood.

The song titles sound rather technical, but
they hide an abundance of colors, textures, and
impressions from veteran composer Yuri Markin, the
survivor of the Soviet jazz big band scene. Markin's
music from the 1970s and 80s, as performed currently
by saxophonist Alexey Kruglov's 20-piece Krugly Band,
rip apart the standard jazz forms from inside, as
those forms are too narrow for it.

Listening to the pieces you could be torn between following the mountain stream and wanting to discern familiar elements, lines, shapes and architecture. The best approach is to abandon search for the familiar, and to immerse oneself as deeply as possible in the movements of the music first and finally getting satisfied by an apprehension of the gestalt that crystallizes in that kind of rewarding interaction. It is facilitated then by the clear articulation, flow and conclusiveness of the music.
