Ben van Gelder
The Whole Wide World Is Round
A special preview at LantarenVenster of the latest work by saxophonist Ben van Gelder. The album The Whole Wide World Is Round is a tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of the North Sea Jazz Festival and to the people who have shaped and sustained jazz.
Memory forms the central theme — personally for Van Gelder, who grew up above his father’s record store Swingmaster in Groningen, a longtime presence at the festival. Abbey Lincoln, whose 1981 performance deeply impressed his mother, lies at the heart of this project. Her poetic texts about time, heritage, and identity inspire new compositions, combined with visuals by Tony Roe and archival footage from Van Gelder’s father.
