"My deep dive into the Israeli music scene and culture has been nothing less than extraordinary. This exchange allowed me to experience and exchange with some of the best artists, music venues, cultural entrepreneurs and professionals and understand their work and culture more deeply"
From: WOMEX / Piranha Arts (Germany)
To: Yellow Submarine / Israel Music Showcase Festival (Israel)
Dates: 15 - 27 November 2022

Incredible, fun, amazing, intense, crazy are some of the many words that come to my mind when I think of the wonderful experience I have had working for ten days with the Yellow Submarine team. A member of EJN, they produce the annual mix-genre Israel Music Showcase Festival (IMSF), taking place in two cities: Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

While I have worked in music events for over a decade, focussing on press and communications for WOMEX, it is always fascinating to see and experience how others work and manage their events. And the only way to grow in the live music business sector is by working and sharing with others, learnings that no event management books could teach.

Thankfully the timings worked well for both the teams as the 28th edition of WOMEX got over in October, leaving some space and time for me to travel to the 13th edition of IMSF. I started one week before the event, allowing me to get behind the scenes with production and planning. This way, I also got to spend some time with the IMSF team: Hadas Vanunu (artistic director) and Itamar Bernstein (international relations) and Atcha Bar (CEO), along with a few others.

IMSF is a showcase event for artists (also open to the local public) presenting music to international delegates from various music professions. A few days before the event, I participated with the IMSF team in an open session for all the performing artists introducing them to the arriving delegation. This session was beneficial in two ways; firstly, it helped the attending artists plan their meetings with the arriving delegates in advance. Furthermore, it gave them tips on networking and getting the most out of their meetings. Secondly, it allowed me to meet and connect with the artists individually and understand their backgrounds and views to support them with their expectations with international events and bookings.

Over the IMSF 2022 event days, while I saw many artists live in action, I got to meet and connect with various music professionals, some of whom are EJN members, allowing us to build a strong network with the possibility of future cooperation and partnerships. My deep dive into the Israeli music scene and culture has been nothing less than extraordinary. This exchange allowed me to experience and exchange with some of the best artists, music venues, cultural entrepreneurs and professionals and understand their work and culture more deeply.

A huge thanks to the Europe Jazz Network and the Creative Europe Programme for creating great opportunities on staff and management levels enabling interaction on such intrinsic levels.
