"Having the chance to meet many people, getting insights of their work, and understanding the differences in processes and funding structures gave me a lot of ideas for my own work at Stadtgarten Köln"
From: Stadtgarten Köln (Germany)
To: Victoria - Nasjonal Jazzscene (Norway)
Dates: 05 - 11 November 2022

My time in Oslo has been one of great experiences and learnings. Besides having the chance to walk through the routines in office and for concerts (in the field) of the production manager Iselin, Jan Ole let me take part in a booking meeting that takes place whenever needed. It gave me the chance to learn about the factors that are important to Nasjonal Jazzscenes booking process. I also had the chance to sit down with the PR/Marketing Manager David to talk about his general routines for a concert and parallels/differences of practices in our work in Norway and Germany. We discussed a lot on target groups, and the pros and cons of social media. This was especially enlightening as we seem to be facing mainly the same problems.

Visiting the weekly office meeting twice gave me a deeper understanding of differences in our routines and structuring. Besides getting to know everyone at the Nasjonal Jazzscene, I fortunately had the chance to meet many people in Oslo: The bandleader of GURLS, Hanna Paulsberg; Tine Hvidsten & Ståle Liavik Solberg of Konsertforeninga (Blow Out Series); Marthe Heggenhougen from Cosmopolite live music venue; agent Malwina Witkowska; Aslak Oppebøen of Music Norway; the Band Building Instruments; Frøydis Bergheim Ruud of the Label Grappa & Hubro and Øyvind Larsen of Oslo Jazzfestival and Jan Ole’s successor of Nasjonal Jazzscene. I was also given the chance to visit many concerts at Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene as well as other venues around the city. I took the chance to see 7 concerts in 10 days. Besides artists I have already mentioned I have seen Isaiah Collier and the Chosen Few, Nduduzo Makhatini, Joel Ross, Cecilie Grundt & Vigleik Storaas, Dahl/Lindeborg/Jonsson and Røysum/Bothén/Strandberg/Jørgens.

Overall, I am very satisfied about the results of my first EJN-Staff Exchange. Having the chance to meet many people, getting insights of their work, and understanding the differences in processes and funding structures gave me a lot of ideas for my own work at Stadtgarten Köln. Finally, my colleagues in Oslo and I decided to keep in touch about how we work and what we might learn in the future that may be of interest to each other.
