UPSTREAM - Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige 2021

Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige 2021 will take place and explore the young scene in the countries on the Danube.

Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige 2021 will take place from June 25th to July 4th - and regarding the program will make up for exactly what the pandemic hindered in 2020. The main axis along which this year's edition will move from north to south and from east to west is the Danube. Following the river and its cultural transitions, the festival will explore a music scene that does not simply drift downstream, but rather swims against the current, far from the mainstream. Musical variety is thus granted: the great river crosses ten countries, the watershed of its Alpine, Pannonian and Balkan tributaries reaches from Germany, Tyrol and Switzerland to Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, to the southern border of Poland and into Ukraine.

With this focus, the festival continues its exploration journeys through Europe. In the past years, musicians from Great Britain, Italy, France, Austria, the Nordic and Benelux countries as well as from Spain and Portugal performed in South Tyrol. Hence, the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige - with its unusual locations and off the beaten track - positioned itself as a showcase for innovative and stylistically boundless music.

Before the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, especially for young people in the socialist states along the Danube and in Eastern Europe, Jazz was a symbol of protest, freedom and avant-garde. How has this music developed there since then and what new paths has it taken in the past decades? What influences do musicians along the Danube take into Jazz? Are there certain character traits that distinguish Eastern European Jazz? Or does none of this matter? These are just a few of the questions that the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige 2021 wants to musically explore.

Curious? We'll start on June 25th – save the date!
