The meeting of these musicians on the stage of the Great Hall of the Elbphilharmonie could be called a summit meeting. And an extraordinary one, because these interpreters and creators of outstanding music from Europe and the USA will probably not meet a second time in this form. And although the evening was a tribute to the life's work of the legendary record producer, posterity will only know about it by hearsay, because the concert was neither streamed nor recorded.
This wonderful concert clearly showed that world and European jazz today seems to be much more sophisticated, emotional, intellectual, and in search of connections with the contemporary avant-garde, classical music, and ethnic currents. Over the years, Manfred Eicher has gathered musicians under the ECM umbrella who are moving in exactly this direction, not only in terms of compositional homogeneity, but also in terms of authentic interplay.
