SonicSound binaural audio by Jazz North

In search of a better listening experience for live jazz recordings Jazz North is now experimenting binaural recording. Normally to make a binaural recording you would use a solid mannequin or 'dummy head' head with a microphone placed in each ear. We went one better and enlisted Rebel Elements musician & producer Sam Hobbs to use his own head - wearing earbud microphones in each ear to record the latest Jazz North northern line artists at Lancaster Jazz Festival in northern England.

Binaural recordings are best listened to with headphones or earbuds. So with the increasing dominance of smartphones and earbuds - especially among younger people, binaural recordings seem a great way to let them experience the atmosphere of a live gig. We're now starting to upload the first artist tracks using this technology onto our YouTube and Soundcloud channels.
