The Snowdrops and Primroses Festival - 9th Festival of Slovenian Jazz Creativity

In presenting new projects, the Zvončki in trobentice Festival strengthens and opens up the possibilities of showcasing and promoting Slovenia’s younger generations of jazz musicians.

18.00 Blaž Švagan – Sound in Time
Blaž Švagan, tenor saxophone; Marko Črncec, piano; Miha Koren, double bass; Matheus Jardim, drums
A transcultural project, Sound in Time abounds in fresh and contemporary musical concepts that reference the New York jazz scene and include various melodic/rhythmic structures of the Balkans.

18.45 Mladi raziskovalci VI. – Domen Kužnar

Mladi Raziskovalci (Young Explorers), a guided series of residences, concerts and performances, is aimed at integrating a selected young artist into professional infrastructure and research environments. The set offers a glimpse at the body of music that violist Domen Kužnar will be working on throughout his year-long creative residence.

19.30 Vsa
Veronika Kumar, vocals, guitar, piano, electronics
Winner of the 2022 Jazzon Award for Best Composition, Veronika Kumar has worked in various settings over the recent years, ranging from jazz to improvisation. After studying at the Ljubljana Conservatory of Music and graduating in jazz singing and electronics in Amsterdam, she concentrated on writing her own music. Veronika’s solo concert is dedicated to her original compositions.

20.15 Luka Zabric The Gatherers
Luka Zabric, alto saxophone; Tin Džaferović, double bass; Luís Oliveira, drums
The different backgrounds of the band members flow seamlessly into an eclectic cohesive force, flavoured by each member’s individual identity and united by a shared musical vision. This time, the trio are looking for a new approach to their core repertoire, but chart a well-trodden path even when driven by more or less wilful impulses.
The concert forms part of “Footprints”, a Creative Europe project.

21.00 WCKD Nation
Maša But, vocals; Filip Vadnu, guitar; Nejc Škofic, keyboards; Grega Skaza, alto saxophone; Matic Mikola, tenor saxophone; Sandi Štor, trumpet; Peter Smrdel, bass; Žiga Smrdel, drums
The band blends elements of jazz and pop music, fusing them into a modern neo-soul. The subdued vocals stay true to contemporary rhythm and blues, with an instrumental backup that draws also on hip-hop and funk. Two of the band’s compositions hit the Val 202 charts, the WCKD Nation ranked among Slovenia’s most interesting bands (24UR portal), won the Radio SI competition, was nominated for the HEMI Award, and received the 2020 zlata piščal prize.
