12 Points

4 days of exciting young jazz acts from across Europe with daytime ‘Jazz Futures’ seminar and after hours jam sessions in DUBLIN this April 15-18th

This April sees the 9th edition of exuberant young European jazz festival,12 Points; back at home base in Dublin after a 2014 edition in Umeå, Sweden.
This 4 day festival presents “The freshest, hottest sounds in jazz and contemporary experimental music” (The Irish Times). 12 young cutting edge acts, from 12 different European countries with a wide diversity in the programme; some comfortably rooted in straight jazz, others rebellious with electronic, rock and folk fusions.
Confirmed acts for this year include imaginative and fearless group Moskus, from the creative milieu of the Jazz Department of the Trondheim Conservatory of Music. Their musical roots are firmly planted in the fertile earth of chamber jazz, but have been nourished by everything from religious hymns to avant garde cinema.
From Dublin we have quintet Umbra, with mature, cohesive writing from band leader guitarist Chris Guilfoyle the band move between the rich harmonic world of contemporary jazz and the cyclical grooves of the likes of Meshuggah and Aphex Twin.
From Zurich über-jazz group Hildegard Lernt Fliegen. Vaudevillian vocalist Andreas Schaerer leads a group of high level musicians creating a sound brimming with wit and imagination. Stasbourg’s Auditive Connection will be our French cohorts, a group very much on an upwards trajectory, having been selected for the 2015 Jazz Migration programme. Brilliant interplay of both structured passages and open improvisations, with voice and cello combining with a rock guitar for an invigorating sound.
12 Points is programmed via an open call to the European jazz community, and with almost 500 applicants for this year’s festival, 12 outstanding acts have now been selected, representing what is hot in Europe for 2015.
*Full programme will be announced on Thursday 5th February*
