Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2023 / artists in residence

As part of the artist in residence programme, the Jazzfestival Saalfelden invites two artists each year to bring several projects to different stages during the festival and thus present themselves to a larger audience. This year, the Japanese koto player Michiyo Yagi and the Swiss vocalist Andreas Schaerer have been selected for this.

Andreas Schaerer
From singing shepherd to beginnings as a punk guitarist and to internationally celebrated "vocal phenomenon" (The Guardian). Andreas Schaerer always puts his vocal superpowers in the service of music - as artist in residence at the Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2023 with four different, partly brand new, always poetically radical and sometimes "astronomically pulsating" formations. The Swiss, who already „learned to fly with Hildegard“, has invited such diverse musicians as the Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima, the American bassist Tim Lefebvre, his Swedish colleague Björn Meyer, the Swiss drummer Julian Sartorius (Sophie Hunger, Matthew Herbert) and the Serbian "Professor of Creative Music Technology" Svetlana Maraš. Sensational? True.

Michiyo Yagi
An imperial court instrument as a manga and anime star: the "arched zither" koto has a very lively tradition in Japan. No one plays this instrument, still too rarely heard in Europe, in the international improvisation scene like Michiyo Yagi. The exceptional musician from Tokoname has been studying the koto since the age of six and has also played it in rock, avant-pop and with John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Billy Bang or Peter Brötzmann. At the Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2023, the versatile multi-singer will present herself this year as artist in residence with three very different bands: with drummer and percussionist Hamid Drake on the Mainstage and twice with her electronic formation Dōjō, once with Norwegian jazz guitarist and electronic musician Eivind Aarset and also with his compatriot Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (Atomic, The Thing, Motorpsycho) on the bass.
