The 2015 edition of the Nattjazz Festival in Bergen, Norway, will take place between the 28th of May and 1st of June. Nattjazz, a member of Europe Jazz Network (EJN), is the oldest and one of the leading jazz festivals in Northern Europe. 35 years old, it presents 10 days of music in a spectacular venue, an old sardine factory, with over 30 concerts of prominent international artists as well as avant-garde and soon-to-be famous projects.
This new edition of the Festival will see the participation, among others, of Reggie Watts, “the world’s funniest jazz musician”, a comedian, musician and performance artist who combines talking, beatboxing, loop station, rap and stand-up comedy. The host country will be present with Emilie Nicolas, the rising star of Norwegian electro pop, and with Ståle Storløkken, who will perform with 3 different projects, including the psychedelic prog jazz band Elephant9.
Seun Kuti, son of the Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, will perform his new songs with the ensemble Egypt 80; while Marc Ribot, one of the world’s top guitarists, will present his new project Ceramic Dog. On the experimental side, Gisle Martens Meyer will present her work The Bow Corpse a performance for BIT20 ensemble, with 12 performers using real time flocking simulators to create swarms of ghost clones of the musicians. Many other musicians, from the jazz, rock, electro and avant-garde scenes will also take the stage during the 10 days of the Festival.
All the events take place at an old converted sardine factory at USF Verftet. In 2013 the Festival inaugurated the new Røkeriet (the Smokehouse). The main stage of the festival was rebuilt and redesigned with a capacity of 1250 and a special care to technical and acoustic needs of both big productions and low key solo performances. In addition 3 more stages, all placed inside the old factory, accommodates all the acts during the days of the Festival.
Since its 1973 debut, Nattjazz (Nightjazz in Norwegian) has brought to Bergen many of the world's greatest artists; from Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, James Brown, Van Morrison, The Band, Pharoah Sanders, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon and Al di Meola, to St Germain, Diana Krall, Gipsy Kings, Macy Gray, Gotan Project, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Reggie Watts.
