Glasgow International Jazz Festival

Glasgow International Jazz Festival presents: Stan Tracey & Bobby Wellins supported by Paul Towndrow and Steve Hamilton

For our final Old Fruitmarket concert we bring back another world class musician who played the venue when it was first used by Glasgow Jazz Festival in 1993, Stan Tracey.

Stan Tracey is an outstanding figure in the jazz world. His career, now entering its seventh decade, has had a huge influence on both his peers and successive generations. As the house pianist at Ronnie Scott’s in the 1960s he played with all the visiting American jazz greats including Sonny Rollins who said of Stan, ‘does anybody here know how good he really is?’.

Throughout his career Stan has also formed his own groups, and wrote many compositions including in 1965 the seminal “Under Milk Wood”.

His piano-playing combines the percussive melody of Thelonious Monk with the robust lyricism of Ellington, resulting in a brilliantly idiosyncratic style. A master of harmony, he possesses a potent and compelling improvisers intellect. In May 2012 Stan Tracey received the first ever Ivors Jazz Award at the Ivor Novello Awards for his immense contribution to jazz.

Stan Tracey will be performing with his quartet featuring the great tenor saxophonist Bobby Wellins.

Bobby Wellins is best known for his solo on “Under Milk Wood”, however his career, like Stan Tracey’s, has continued to develop and flourish. He is highly regarded for his distinctive smoky tone, gentle yet passionate and his cool-school jazz phrasing. He is seen as one of the most original British saxophonists and was awarded Jazz musician of the year 2012.

Two of Scotland’s finest performers tenor saxophonist Paul Towndrow and pianist Steve Hamilton support.

The album “Under Milk Wood” will be played as part of Classic Album series prior to the concert at 6pm.
