Folk Rising: Fran Smith, Matt Stalker and Fables, and Tracey Browne

Returning for a short series, this is the first of three Folk Rising concerts featuring up and coming songwriters.

Fran Smith

Fran Smith has attracted fans of the highest order. Thea Gilmore, Athlete, Karine Polwart, Boo Hewerdine and Po’ Girl have all invited her to open shows for them, which she has subsequently done to much acclaim, each performance generating a whole host of new Fran Smith supporters. Fans of romantic, passionate and honest lyrics, will adore this original and distinctive new voice.

Matt Stalker and Fables

Fables is a changing collective of gifted musicians whose armoury of instruments intertwine with Matt’s intricate guitar work and Buckley-esque vocals to create beautiful ‘chamber folk’. The collective developed gradually, through meeting and exchanging ideas at gigs, and brings together established musicians from across the North East music scene playing cello, viola, drums, vibraphone, bouzouki, and more. For Folk Rising, they are playing it as a three-piece – guitar/vocals, viola and cello.

Tracey Browne

Often deceptively straightforward and shot through with a pop sensibility, Tracey Browne’s material seems hand crafted to catch those fleeting, transient moments, the times in lives where the axis tilts, the season begins to change and the balance hangs.

Folk Rising is presented by the English Folk Dance and Song Society in association with Folkworks and The Sage Gateshead, funded by Arts Council England.
