From 10 to 17 October 2026, the Dutch city of Zwolle once again becomes the stage for Common Ground Festival. What started as an innovative one-day musical route festival has evolved into a vibrant week-long celebration of live music during the autumn holidays. Blending jazz, world music, classical and cross-genre performances in remarkable venues, Common Ground invites audiences to experience music and the city itself from a fresh perspective.

A Festival Built Around Discovery

At the heart of Common Ground lies the belief that great music deserves extraordinary settings. Historic buildings, cultural landmarks and unexpected urban spaces become intimate stages where audiences encounter internationally acclaimed artists alongside exciting new talent.

The festival's signature Route Festival on Saturday 10 October remains its defining experience. Visitors choose one of several curated routes through Zwolle's historic city centre, each revealing a carefully crafted sequence of performances. While some artists are announced in advance, part of every route remains a surprise, encouraging audiences to embrace the unexpected. Every route also includes a stop at Van der Velde in de Broeren, widely considered the Netherlands' most beautiful bookstore, which is transformed exclusively for the evening into a spectacular concert venue.

Discover the Countryside by Bike

On Sunday 11 October, audiences are invited to leave the city behind and explore Zwolle's surrounding landscape during Common Ground by Bike. This unique cycling experience combines scenic routes with live performances at three exceptional locations, including the striking Koelwaterhal, a monumental former power station. Among the featured artists is acclaimed Dutch theatre maker, cyclist and passionate jazz enthusiast Wilfried de Jong, alongside a diverse programme of musical performances.

Music for the Next Generation

Common Ground also offers an inspiring programme for children and families throughout the autumn holidays. The Mini Kids Route presents two performances at two surprising locations across the city, introducing young audiences to adventurous live music in playful and accessible ways.

One of the highlights brings together internationally renowned cellist Maya Fridman and BMX freestyle champion Sietse van Berkel, proving that classical music and breathtaking BMX tricks can create an unforgettable shared experience.

Night Mode: Stretching Musical Boundaries

The festival concludes on Saturday 17 October with the launch of Night Mode, a new late-night programme where jazz, neo-classical music, electronic soundscapes and club culture converge.

Hosted at Achtergracht, a former office building transformed into a creative hub with a distinctly Berlin-inspired atmosphere, Night Mode features an international line-up of adventurous artists  performing in an immersive environment where music, visuals and architecture merge into one continuous experience.

Connecting People Through Music

More than a music festival, Common Ground is an invitation to explore. It encourages audiences to wander, discover unfamiliar places, encounter new sounds and connect with fellow music lovers in an open and welcoming atmosphere.
