Close encounters in Flagey’s Studio 1

At Flagey (Brussels), Studio 1 offers a different kind of concert experience: an intimate space with exceptional acoustics, where every musical gesture resonates directly with the audience.

This autumn, that setting becomes a natural home for music built on listening, encounter and experimentation. Cochemea (16 October) creates a dialogue between his Yaqui heritage and the sounds of funk, R&B and Latin jazz, while the lyrical, meditative world of Steve Okonski (29 October) invites us to slow down and listen closely. Other projects take the idea of encounter into more adventurous territory: Youran (8 October) weaves the eclectic combination of saxophone, brass, Japanese percussion and electronics into constantly shifting soundscapes, while Toine Thys & Motoï Kanamori (28 November) turn their unexpected encounter into a vibrant musical connection. And with Farida Amadou, Marc Ribot and Ches Smith (6 November), close listening becomes raw, spontaneous interplay, as three distinctive voices navigate the unpredictable space between free jazz, noise and electroacoustic improvisation.

In Studio 1, jazz comes alive through the interaction between space, audience and musicians.
