BIMHUIS

In October 2014, the Bimhuis in Amsterdam reached the proud age of forty. Its middle-age spread will fill the whole season with a range of activities and special events, and started with the kick-off weekend from the first of October. 5 days of concerts featuring a.o. Taksim Trio, Duo Benjamin Herman/Anton Goudsmit, David Kweksilber Big Band, Kaja Draksler Solo, Amsterdam Real Book, ICP, Peter Evans Quintet, Balkan Clarinet Summit, Wayne Horvitz European Orchestra, Dave Burrell, Joe Morris and many more.

For 40 years, the Bimhuis has been working closely with interesting venues and scenes outside the Netherlands. Thread in the anniversary programming '14 -'15 is further intensification of the international activities of the Bimhuis under the name CITY LINKS.

PROJECTS COMING UP:

7 MARCH 2015
40 YEARS CITY LINKS: LONDON - AMSTERDAM #3
ALEXANDER HWAKINS / HAN BENNINK

Maverick British pianist, organist and composer Alexander Hawkins meets Holland’s most adventurous drummer Han Bennink. Exchange with the London club Vortex as part of the Bimhuis 40 Years program.

33 year-old pianist Alexander is among the fastest emerging voices of British jazz, in both leftfield and more traditional practices. He has played warm spirited Ethio-jazz with Mulatu Astatke as well as harcore improv with Evan Parker. Hawkins developed a profound knowledge of jazz piano history and is simultaneously regarded as one of the most interesting Hammond organ players of our time. Following a well-received duo CD with South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo (‘a knockout duo album’, according to Downbeat) he will now perform with drummer Han Bennink, pioneer of New Dutch Swing and ‘an intuitive and versatile genius of instant improvisation’ (The Wire).

28 MARCH
CITY LINKS CHICAGO AMSTERDAM
CONSTELLATION 100
Chicago and Amsterdam: influential musicians from both cities join forces for adventurous jazz and improvisation. City Links concert as part of 40 Years Bimhuis.

Chicago and Amsterdam both have thriving avant-garde music scenes thanks to the five musicians on stage in this unique edition of City Links, the concert series initiated for Bimhuis 40 Years. They share their fascination for jazz and improvisation in the adventurous tradition of Amsterdam and Chicago alike. Think for example of ICP or Available Jelly on the one hand and Sun Ra or Anthony Braxton on the other.

City Links is made possible by Buma Culture.
