For years the San Sebastian Jazz Festival had harboured the wish of billing Norah Jones in the city. That dream will come true on 22 July when the singer performs at the Kursaal Auditorium.

Another of the aims fulfilled is being able to enjoy two British artists we have tried to bill for several editions, and who will perform in the Plaza de la Trinidad this year: the singer Joss Stone and the saxophone player Nubya Garcia.

Completing our wish list are Ben Harper, who will perform for the first time at the Jazzaldia; and Enrico Rava, who had to postpone his show because of the pandemic, and who will finally come to this year’s San Sebastian Jazz Festival.

The programme for the paying concerts at the 58th Jazzaldia, to run from 21-25 July 2023, is varied, intense and hugely attractive.

The Plaza de la Trinidad

This, Jazzaldia’s most iconic stage, will offer a programme of performances by legendary artists and brilliant new arrivals. Alongside classics such as Enrico Rava, with a quintet of emerging Italian musicians, and the great Abdullah Ibrahim with his trio, will be a new music quartet brought by a musician whose last performance at our Festival was simply marvellous: Bill Frisell. However, the Trini will also feature the presence of fantastic new names: the extraordinary guitarist Julian Lage, the above-mentioned Joss Stone and Nubya Garcia, and the superb Austrian keyboard-player David Helbock, with his latest project: the superband, Austrian Syndicate.

Kursaal Auditorium

We will celebrate the 80th birthday of Kenny Barron, the best Jazz pianist still performing today, accompanied by the Basque Youth Orchestra (EGO) in their first appearance at the Jazzaldia.

Norah Jones, the star attraction on the programme, will perform on 22 July in what will be the first ever show given by the great pianist and singer in our city.

On the 23rd Ben Harper, the quintessential leading light of contemporary blues, will take to the stage.

On Monday 24, one of the all-time Jazz greats, Pat Metheny, with his Side Eye project, will perform in the company of some of the best up-and-coming names in the new generation of American musicians.

And, finally, on Tuesday 25th July, one of the most creative and exciting proposals on the Spanish scene, the singer Rocío Márquez with the musician and producer BRONQUIO.

San Telmo Museum

Next year, 2023, is Basque Country-Japan year. To celebrate it, the 58th Jazzaldia will programme a piano season in the marvellous Museum cloister, exclusively dedicated to Japanese pianists.

The most important of all, and one of the country’s most universal musicians, is Yosuke Yamashita. His importance on the Jazz scene is enormous and his prestige incomparable. Yosuke will give two concerts: one dedicated to standard numbers and his own compositions, and the other to his particular and passionate take on the classical repertoire including Ravel’s Bolero and G. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, among others.

The other three pianists, Kento Tsubosaka, Hakuei Kim, and Eri Yamamoto, who already played in the city, complete a thrilling season of the very highest musical quality.

Victoria Eugenia Theatre

Also going on sale, although the performing groups won’t be known in detail until April, are tickets for the JazzEñe season, to take place once again in the framework of the San Sebastian Jazz Festival. This will be the ninth edition of JazzEñe during which, for four days from 22-25 July, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy 8 artists selected by the SGAE Foundation in its endeavour to attract attention to Spanish Jazz and take it into the international arena.

Tickets and Passes

Tickets for the Plaza de la Trinidad, Kursaal Auditorium, San Telmo Museum and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre will go on sale at 11:30 on 15 December. Tickets can be purchased in person from the theatre desk and online, via the Jazzaldia (www.jazzaldia.eus) and Donostia Kultura (www.donostiakultura.eus) websites.

Programme of free concerts

Although tickets go on sale today for the paying concerts, we still have heaps to announce on the Jazzaldia programme, all equally or more important than the names already revealed. Here we refer to the free concerts that will pack the streets of our city like every year.

In the coming months we will announce all these free concerts to run on stages such as the Nauticool, the Kursaal Terraces and the Keler Gunea. This latter stage, the most popular, on the Zurriola Beach, is once again named after Keler, our main sponsor for yet another edition.
