In a small country like Switzerland, it's rare not to know someone who has a big influence in what they do. However, our booker, Yunus, admits that this is exactly what happened, and he is more than delighted about it.
He discovered the drummer Samuel Rohrer by chance early one morning at a festival in Portugal and was immediately impressed. What was striking was that Samuel Roher is an improvisational sound pilot who masterfully navigates between beats and anti-beats.
Through his artistic, cross-genre concept, he brings playful emotional components to the world of pure rhythm. Thinking outside the box, he connects things that don't necessarily fit together. In short, he builds bridges.
This is particularly evident in music. He originally has a background in acoustic improvisational music. He studied jazz in Bern and Boston and then toured with greats such as Ricardo Villalobos, Peter Herbert and Erik Truffaz. He has also been immersed in the world of electronic music for several years, creating his own unique space between these two genres.
Having lived in Berlin since 2003, the Swiss musician is one of the few alchemical explorers to have succeeded in creating his own unique hybrid form, which does not merely blur boundaries for their own sake. It is instead the natural result of years of experimentation, combining the determined nature of electronic music with the playful spirit of free improvisation.
In doing so, he evokes the emotional atmosphere of the thoughtful and questioning tone of electronic music in the mid-to-late 1990s, when it was in a 'wide open' state. However, with greater clarity and maturity of vision, this music offers a potential response to the aesthetic questions posed during that period.
We look forward to hearing Samuel perform at Moods on 15 February as he builds bridges between two different worlds of sound, tears them down and rebuilds them again.
