Most of the important awards are open only for musicians living and working in Germany, such as WDR Jazz Preis, SWR-Jazzpreis, Berliner Jazzpreis (completely or partially donated by public radio stations), Hessischer Jazzpreis or Baden-Württembergischer Jazzpreis. Some of the rare examples of privately funded jazz prizes in Germany are Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis Mannheim or the BMW Welt Jazz Award (both are competitions). The latter is awarded yearly to international bands with a changing focus on specific instrumental constellations.

The newly established Deutscher Jazzpreis, awarded yearly, aiming to showcase the prolific innovative jazz scene at its best, is open to international musicians and bands in some of the 31 categories.
Named after the famous German trombonist, is awarded every two years by Deutsche Jazzunion to jazz musicians working in Germany for their lifetime achievement or particularly great current influence. The prize is awarded alternately to a woman and a man.
Music fair taking place yearly in spring in Bremen has become the international meeting point of the jazz scene, offering a trade fair, showcases (mostly from the yearly changing partner country), a festival, and numerous other events for networking and business presentations.
Biannual conference with different topics pertaining to jazz and the jazz scene open to both national and international scholars, musicians and others active in the jazz scene.
