The Green Pilot Tour by FUR unfolded as a compact cross-border journey between the Netherlands and Belgium, bringing the trio’s chamber-jazz sound to four closely connected cities. The tour was coordinated by Kunstencentrum KAAP, working together with EJN member Music Meeting, and produced by Tricollectif (Orléans, FR). FUR is a trio featuring clarinetist and composer Hélène Duret, guitarist Benjamin Sauzereau and drummer Maxime Rouayroux.

Designed around the use of train travel as the primary mode of long-distance transport, the tour reflected both the band’s democratic artistic approach and the practical principles of greener touring. Tight routing between geographically close venues allowed for efficient mobility while maintaining strong artistic visibility. Three out of the four concerts were sold out, demonstrating that sustainability-oriented touring can go hand in hand with audience interest and artistic success.

Beyond transport, attention was also paid to materials, catering and audience travel, reinforcing sustainability as a shared responsibility between artists, organisers and venues. The collaboration between partners — many of whom had not previously worked together — highlighted the Green Pilot Tour’s role as a catalyst for new, environmentally minded networks among small and mid-sized jazz venues.

To include the artist’s perspective, promoter and researcher Martyna van Nieuwland produced a podcast interview with Hélène Duret, reflecting on how ecological awareness influences artistic identity and long-term creative choices. The conversation offered valuable insights into how musicians experience and internalise the principles of sustainable touring.

For KAAP and its partners, the tour underlined the importance of clear communication, adapted technical riders and realistic planning. It also confirmed the relevance of the Green Pilot Tour model for non-commercial jazz contexts, where collaboration and shared resources are essential to building sustainable touring practices.
