Scott Mulvahill (double bass)

Frontman, singer-songwriter, world-renowned bassist and multi-instrumentalist. Scott Mulvahill has left his unique mark on the intersecting worlds of Americana, bluegrass, folk, jazz, rock & roll. He is already recognized for his work alongside icons such as Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby.

Scott Mulvahill, who was raised in Houston, spent five years touring the world with Ricky Skaggs’ acclaimed band Kentucky Thunder, wh provided the rhythmic foundation for their celebrated sound. At the same time, he was developing his own musical voice – one shaped by the sophisticated pop of Paul Simon, the introspective folk of James Taylor and the groundbreaking jazz of Jaco Pastorius. This development was evident on his 2018 solo debut album, which transcended genres and began his transition from a brilliant sideman to a magnetic frontman. Since then, Mulvahill has performed hundreds of concerts around the world, appeared on NPR's Tiny Desk and Mountain S, and collaborated with a host of acclaimed artists, including Cory Wong, Cody Frye, Lauren Daigle, Keb' Mo'a, Oliver Hazard, and Ben Rector.

THE DATABASS PROJECT

"I want to go where I've never been," Scott sings on the starkly ornate title track, one of several tracks that explore universal themes of fear, leaping forward, and the pursuit of new horizons. This message is echoed in Mulvahill's own career, pioneering a sound centered around his voice and the double bass, breaking new ground with the debut of his custom-designed DataBass, a revolutionary instrument that combines the traditional double bass with the power of MIDI sampling. Designed and crafted by Mulvahill, the DataBass expands the possibilities of the double bass and pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved as a solo artist. In August 2024, Scott gave a talk at TEDxNashville, where he demonstrated the instrument, its capabilities, and the philosophy behind its creation.
