MATS EILERTSEN (Norway)
Mats Eilertsen is one of the best and most distinctive double bass players on the Norwegian jazz scene today. He has a special warm and lyrical way of handling the bass, he is steady and experimental at the same time, he brings it all together, while showing openness, willingness and a constant search for new sounds.
Double bass player, composer and bandleader Eilertsen comes from Trondheim and graduated from the jazz department at NTNU. He has participated in a large number of recordings, composed for many ensembles and projects and has toured all over the world with his own bands as well as ensembles led by Norwegian and international jazz artists. He has a particularly warm and lyrical way of handling the bass, steady and experimental at the same time, combining all this with openness, willingness and a constant search for new sounds. He has toured with his own trio, the Mats Eilertsen Trio, as well as the Håkon Kornstad Trio, Trygve Seim's "Helsinki Songs", The Source, the Jacob Young Trio, and Nils Økland. Other recent recordings he has contributed to are Andreas Ulvo "Vindalll" (2025), Erlend Apneseth "Song over Støv" (Hubro 2025), Benedicte Maurseth "Mirra" (Hubro 2025), Nils Økland "Gjenskinn" (Hubro 2024H), BeriHeit Opi 2024 division of the wasteland" (release 2024)
PROJECT Mats Eilertsen «1»
This is his first album under his own name since the two releases "Hymn For Hope" (quartet) and "Solitude Central" (live solo release) on his own label Hemli in 2021.
The album offers concentrated, short and some slightly longer pieces. Focused, clean songs, with (for Eilertsen) abundant use of strings, exploring bass sounds and opportunities inspired by folk music sounds and qualities, ringing and singing pizzicato parts, chords and overtones, mainly acoustic and solo, but with some overdubs and the use of subtle electronic effects.
