NENAD VASILIĆ (Serbia)

Musical brilliance and living inspiration: no one compares to him – double bass player, composer, arranger and complete rhythm section, refined and combined in one person: Nenad Vasilić has long been at the forefront of European jazz and is highly regarded across the continent. Born in Niš, Serbia, he grew up surrounded by the rich tradition of Balkan folklore.
 
Nenad Vasilić is a prominent jazz artist – double bassist and composer, who has been active on the European music scene for over 25 years. He  studied at the Jazz Department of the Kunst-Universität Graz (KUG) has been enriching the world with his music far beyond European borders.
Vasilić plays his original compositions inspired by Balkan rhythms, jazz and classical music with great success in various ensembles – from duo to sextet and in solo performances. Vasilić has recorded 13 albums under his own name in various formations. In April 2020, Nenad Vasilić was appointed full-time professor and head of the double bass department at the Berlin Jazz Institute at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin). The music he creates is in constant interaction with the audience, as he performs over 80 times a year on concert stages, festivals and in clubs all over Europe. With almost 40 original compositions on 13 albums, Vasilić uniquely combines jazz, improvisation and world music, making them his own. In 2004, his album “Nenad Vasilić Balkan Band Live in ORF” was nominated for the Hans Koller Prize. His compositions, at once innovative and respectful of the musical traditions that have made him what he is today, radiate a lightness and a virtuous understanding of the complexity of Balkan rhythms and melodies. This pioneering musician from Vienna has now left a subtle but lasting mark on the European world music and jazz scene, and as an arranger and producer he is constantly redrawing his personal and musical boundaries.
 
PROJECT Nenad Vasilic Trio
 
Vasilic's repertoire today consists mainly of original compositions by him and his long-time partner Marko Živadinovič. The Nenad Vasilić Trio Live is exclusively their creation. These impressive melodies have the features of new standards and will soon be performed by other artists. Melancholic, dynamic, lyrical, flowing, percussive, frenetic, romantic, watercolors: eight shades of beauty are spread out in the next album, of which Nenad Vasilić and his friends can be proud.
