PROJECT Oleś Brothers & Dominik Strycharski – Koptycus
The Oleś brothers invited Dominik Strycharski, a prominent figure in the Polish improvised music scene, a flutist, singer and composer, to participate in the KOPTYCUS project. Strycharski is one of the few who has managed to successfully incorporate the recorder into jazz and engage in musical experiments. His interesting vocal style does not shy away from balanced electronic elements. The source of inspiration and the main point of reference for this trio of extraordinary artists was the music of the Copts - one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. Thanks to centuries of isolation and relative aloofness, they developed and to this day preserve their original musical language, originating from pre-Christian times, assimilating Greek, Jewish and, a little later, Muslim accents. By searching and exploring the musical codes of the first Christians and translating them into the language and aesthetics of modern times, the artists created an outstanding work. A colorful, multi-threaded story about the world of the ancient Eastern churches, read through the prism of the broadly defined territory of Coptic music. An extraordinary story was created, which in places uses narrative patterns universal in our culture and typical of ancient Greece, but speaks to us in a modern, often innovative musical language.
