PETER EDWARDS | A JOURNEY WITH THE GIANTS OF JAZZ

Thursday 16 March 8pm, Turner Sims Southampton

Peer into the defining year for jazz, 1917, with pianist, composer and bandleader, Peter Edwards.

1917 saw the births of some of the most influential jazz artists, including composer ‘Tadd’ Dameron, singer Ella Fitzgerald, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Thelonious Monk, drummer Buddy Rich and percussionist Mongo Santamaria.

Taking inspiration from the motifs found in six of the artists’ classic works, Peter Edwards’ piece, A Journey with the Giants of Jazz, commissioned by Turner Sims Southampton and performed by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra, deconstructs themes from the six works to offer the audience a reimagined and alternative musical experience.

Presented in association with Turner Sims Southampton, in partnership with Tomorrow’s Warriors and Southampton Music Hub, A Journey with the Giants of Jazz is part of The Jazz Ticket nationwide schools programme.

Generously supported by PRS Foundation’s New Music Biennial.
