Music Meeting presents ‘Through their eyes’

A new composition by Saskia Venegas Aernouts for KRONOS QUARTET. World premiere May 8, 2025, in collaboration with TivoliVredenburg.

The remarkable American string quartet Kronos Quartet has been championing contemporary music for over 50 years and enjoys performing works by up-and-coming composers. On May 8, 2025 the quartet will premiere ‘Through their eyes’, a composition written by Saskia Venegas Aernouts, who is taking part in a two-year talent development trajectory at Music Meeting.

This concert evening is organised by TivoliVredenburg in collaboration with Music Meeting.

‘Through their eyes’

By facing the deep-rooted pain and unresolved crimes against humanity in her native Spain, the Spanish/Belgian composer Saskia Venegas Aernouts reflects on the loss of empathy and its dangers in her composition ‘Through their eyes’.

“The refusal to discuss history and bring closure to the grieving process creates division and remains an open wound that festers beneath the surface, as unresolved grief and anger are passed down from generation to generation. The loss of empathy in society, fueled by fear and hatred, leads to further cruelty and the dehumanization of the 'other.' If we do not learn to see through the eyes of others, history will continue to repeat itself and my country’s past will unfortunately become another country’s future.” (Saskia Venegas Aernouts)

Saskia Venegas Aernouts, who has been living in The Netherlands since years, is following an intensive talent development trajectory, called ‘Nieuwe Makers’ (new makers), at Music Meeting. In 2024 and 2025, she will work under the auspices of the festival on her artistic and business development and the creation of two productions. David Harrington, violinist and founder of Kronos Quartet, who will perform one of her new works, is one of the coaches who will coach her during process. The Nieuwe Makers trajectory is made possible by the Performing Arts Fund NL.
