Joshua Redman headlining the Jazz By The Sea: The American star saxophonist Joshua Redman returns to the festival, and he becomes one of the main attractions and the first announcements to the concert theme Jazz By The Sea at Islands Brygge, where Redman takes over the stage on Wednesday 9 June in a strong company of the pianist Aaron Goldberg, the bass player Reuben Rogers and the drummer Gregory Hutchinson.

Dave Holland – two nights in Jazzhouse: This is a real bass legend that can be seen in Jazzhouse throughout two consecutive nights during this year’s festival. British-born Dave Holland was discovered by Miles Davis in the late 1960s and can be heard on classic Miles releases like, ”In A Silent Way” and ”Bitches Brew”. Holland has released about twenty albums under his own name (also on ECM) and is a much respected composer. He hits Jazzhouse on the 9th and 10th of July with its new super band Prism, consisting of the guitarist Kevin Eubanks, the pianist Craig Taborn and the drummer Eric Harland.

Manu Katché & Richard Bona Friday blast on Bryggen: One of the big news at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival will be an explosive new quartet led by the Franco-Ivorian drummer Manu Katché and equilibristic bass player Richard Bona, who has a large fan base here in Denmark and was the center of a touching double bass-blast show at the last year’s festival in the Royal Theatre with Marcus Miller. This virtuoso rhythm section with African roots was introduced along with the Italian saxophonist Stefano Di Battista and Belgian pianist Eric Legnini at what should have been a one-off show at the French festival Jazz a Marciac, but became so successful an all star performance, that they put together their first tour and are coming to play at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2014 on Friday, 11th July.

ABOUT DAVE HOLLAND’S PRISM (UK / US)
During a career that spans nearly five decades, the acclaimed bass player and composer Dave Holland has never stopped developing and reinventing a musical approach to every aspect of his work, while he has managed to maintain his instantly recognizable sound on double bass.

Over the course of a nearly five-decade career, bassist/composer Dave Holland has never stopped evolving, reinventing his concept and approach with each new project while constantly honing his instantly identifiable voice. From the electricwhirlwind of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew-era band to the elegant flamenco of his collaboration with Spanish guitar legend Pepe Habichuela; accompanying the great vocalist Betty Carter in her last years to forging a new sound with the pioneering avant-garde quartet Circle alongside Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, and Barry Altschul; standing alongside legends like Stan Getz, Hank Jones, Roy Haynes, and Sam Rivers to providing early opportunities to now-leading players like Chris Potter, Kevin and Robin Eubanks, or Steve Coleman; Dave Holland has been at the forefront of jazz in many of its forms since his earliest days - which also includes more than a dozen releases by ECM, and in recent years, on Holland’s own label Dare2.

In 2013 British Dave Holland celebrated his 40th anniversary as a band leader in a distinctive style, by looking even further into the future. In 1973 he formed his first quartet (Rivers, Braxton and Altschul) on the album “Conference of the Birds,” and at the anniversary, Holland successfully presented his new group Prism – an electric supergroup with Craig Taborn on keys, Eric Harland on drums and his favorite guitarist Kevin Eubanks, who to many has been known as the band leader of the Jay Leno Show for many years.

The critically acclaimed Prism project is described as “more electrified, and usually louder, than bands he’s led before,” and “The music is like a vortex, sucking in everything within earshot. Interlocking patterns, excoriating lines, killer grooves and blazing solos are par for the course,” and it is this project that you can experience for the first time on Danish soil. Dave Holland ‘s Prism plays two evenings in Jazzhouse during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2014.

Line-up: Dave Holland (bass), Kevin Eubanks (guitar), Craig Taborn (piano), Eric Harland (drums)

ABOUT JOSHUA REDMAN QUARTET (US)

Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artistes to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of music and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to what became his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone, one year later. Redman quickly began jamming and gigging regularly with some of the leading jazz musicians of his generation. To date he has been nominated for 2 Grammys and has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.

Joshua Redman has been one of the key pioneering saxophonists for the last 20 years. He also managed to record several albums with his father and to form the trio Elastic before he, in 2005, switched to the record label Nonesuch, where he developed the format Joshua Redman Double Trio, recorded new material in 2013 with his friend and musical partner Brad Mehldau, and this year he is coming to the fore with a tour of its most close-knit quartet with Aaron Goldberg, Greg Hutchinson and Reuben Rogers, that was originally formed in 1998 and released records “Beyond” (2000) and “Passage of Time” (2001). Together with his quartet, he each times embarks on a new adventure. He is a gifted performer and inventive saxophonist, and the quartet provides excellent accompaniment. Drummer Gregory Hutchinson has the knack of starting a solo unobtrusively and transforming it into an explosive rhythmic blend. Reuben Rogers anchors the music with his deep tone featuring echoes of gospel. Pianist Aaron Goldberg devises sparkling lines, and entices Redman with his ingenious harmonies.

On stage Redman is a true performer, where he sounds more unpolished, pricklier, as well as more agreeable. He loves performing, since jazz is above all improvised music. This is when he changes into a compelling story teller, and identifies the perfect tempo for the concert.

Line-up: Joshua Redman (saxophones), Aaron Goldberg (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass), Greg Hutchinson (drums)

ABOUT MANU KATCHÉ & RICHARD BONA (FR/CM)

This virtuoso rhythm section with African roots was introduced along with the Italian saxophonist Stefano Di Battista and Belgian pianist Eric Legnini to what should have been a one-off show at the French festival Jazz a Marciac, but that became so successful an all star performance, that they put together their first tour and are coming to play at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2014 in July.

Manu Katché, Richard Bona, Eric Legnini and Stefano Di Battista are all amazing musicians in their own way and scene that have changed the face of the contemporary jazz milieu, and overall it’s a veritable all star band with a gaudy musical identity. Katchés masterful and rapid flow has given him the nickname the Mohammad Ali of drummers. Richard Bona is not just a great fusion bass player with a heavy groove, but knows how to adapt his game to a wide range of expression, especially combined with his talents as a vocalist that pulls roots back to growing up in a highly musical family in Cameroon.

Line-up: Stefano Di Battista (saxophone); Eric Legnini (piano); Richard Bona (bass); Manu Katché (drums).
