Join Turner Sims as we mark International Jazz Day 2021 with an exclusive double bill of British jazz talent presented direct from the concert hall and hosted by journalist and broadcaster Kevin Le Gendre.

Saxophonist and composer Denys Baptiste is one of most celebrated and important jazz musicians in the UK. For this special broadcast Denys revisits music from his much heralded Edition Records release The Late Trane, named an Album of the Year by Jazzwise and at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, and nominated for a Jazz FM Award. In a strong musical statement, Baptiste re-imagines the late period music of John Coltrane, that balances the master saxophonist’s unique artistic vision with the visceral emotions and cosmic references that encompass Coltrane’s later work. The Late Trane is a reverent acknowledgement of this remarkable man and his music, by an artist with his own voice and his own sense of destiny.

John Coltrane continues to be one of my most important influences and his late period has always intrigued me and inspired my work over many years. I feel that to truly understand this music ‘you really need to play it’ and my new amazing group are up for the challenge of introducing this music to a whole new audience. Join us on The Late Trane for a truly inspirational musical journey. Denys Baptiste

Opening the event is one of the brightest and boldest jazz talents in the UK, hailed by Downbeat Magazine as ‘at the vanguard of innovative and compelling new music’. Pianist and composer Rebecca Nash is leader of her own band ATLAS, as well as a member of saxophonist Dee Byrne’s Entropi, and collaborator with trumpeter Nick Walters, and singer-songwriter Sara Colman. Rebecca’s Turner Sims performance is a rare opportunity to hear her in solo piano mode. Expect a set of intimate, atmospheric sounds and including specially arranged numbers from her acclaimed ATLAS debut release Peaceful King, alongside new material from her forthcoming album Redefining Element 78.
