EVERY NOTE YOU PLAY by writer and director Mika Kaurismäki opens in cinemas nationwide on June 26, 2025. The documentary film was made at The Prequel of the second Monheim Triennale in summer 2024. In it, Kaurismäki documents a musical experiment, the encounter of internationally renowned musicians who meet for the first time and make music together, capturing the unique moment in which music is created.

Director Mika Kaurismäki immerses himself in this creative state of emergency with his camera, visualises the diverse and unique process with his unique signature and asks the big question: What is creativity?

A radical experiment: 16 world-class musicians come together at the Monheim Triennale (NRW) - without guidelines, without a plan, but in front of an audience. For three days, they create something completely new, beyond genres and expectations. Avant-garde, jazz, folk, indie - none of that matters any more. It's all about the pure musical experience, the clash of global sounds and the courage to embrace the unknown. The film not only shows this unique process, but also poses the big question: What is creativity? A rousing appeal to take risks, cross boundaries and utilise creativity as a life energy.

Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki ushered in a new era in Finnish cinema in the early 1980s with his first feature film ‘The Worthless’ (1982). He is known for his diverse work spanning several decades and with more than 40 films in his filmography, he is Finland's most prolific film director. He has directed notable films such as ‘Master Cheng’ (2019), ‘Road North’ (2012), ‘L.A. Without a Map’ (1998), ‘Zombie and the Ghost Train’ (1991), ‘Helsinki Napoli - all night long’ (1987) and ‘Rosso’ (1985), proving his versatility and narrative skills. His films often deal with interpersonal relationships, cultural encounters and the pitfalls of everyday life with a distinctive visual style and a touch of humour. In addition to feature films, Mika Kaurismäki has also made several award-winning documentaries, including ‘Mama Africa’ about Miriam Makeba (Audience Award at the Berlinale 2012), “Brasileirinho” (2005) and ‘Tigrero - a film that was never made’ with Samuel Fuller and Jim Jarmusch (International Critics' Award at the Berlinale 1995).

The protagonists represent a cross-section of the international avant-garde of improvised modern music. Musicians from Europe, Asia and the United States, some established and internationally renowned in various formations, others newcomers at the beginning of their careers. Musical styles, instruments and musical traditions are represented in the greatest possible diversity and range.
