Jazztopad

The year 2015 is in many ways a breakthrough for Jazztopad.

Having built its well-recognized brand for eleven years now, Jazztopad moves to the National Forum of Music – one of the most important concert venues in Europe. The long-awaited moment has come, and we can give our listeners and our artists optimal conditions for celebrating improvisation.

This year also sees the publication of William Parker’s CD featuring For Those Who Are Still (AUM) and the publication of Charles Lloyd's Wild Man Dance (Blue Note). Both albums feature works commissioned by Jazztopad in 2013 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival. These are events without precedence on the map of Polish jazz festivals. I am so happy that the most important musicians in jazz history write new works for us and release them on best labels.

There is one more event worth highlighting. The work by Nikola Kołodziejczyk Chord Nation commissioned by Jazztopad was awarded Fryderyk in the Debut of the Year category. It is the second award of the Phonographic Academy for a work commissioned by Jazztopad. The first one was for Piotr Damasiewicz’s Hadrons

Jazztopad would not be Jazztopad without premieres. The 12th edition will see five new works being played for the first time!

This year’s Jazztopad will open with a wonderful concert devoted to the works of Kenny Wheeler, who passed away last year. For me this concert is particularly important, because Kenny Wheeler was the first artist I invited to Jazztopad, but also because it was thanks to his music that I started listening to jazz.

The 2015 premieres will include works by violinist Mark Feldman, double bassist Anders Jormin and a special project by Trilok Gurtu. Wrocław invites another outstanding personality: Anthony Braxton will grace us with his quintet in his only concert in Europe.

The great finale will present pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and his trio. Abdullah is yet another legend who will visit Wrocław for the first time in history.

We also promise you more artistic discoveries, concerts in living rooms and movie shows for children with live music. Come and join us for Jazztopad 2015 at the NFM!
