Finnish trumpet player and composer Verneri Pohjola is recognized as an emerging jazz star.

He is a force of nature, undoubtedly a huge talent and a musician with a leading and distinctive voice who can bring warmth and peace and at the same time pulsating intensity to his performance. His compositions are strong and bold, proficient in finding those brisk melodies that will jump at you as progressive, creative and individual.

Verneri was born into a Finnish music dynasty and was destined for a musical life. His grandfather Ensti Pohjola was a respected and highly active amateur conductor and cellist, and his father's cousin is conductor Sakari Oramo. His father, Pekka Pohjola, rose to international fame in the 1970s by playing with the Finnish progressive band Wigwam and leading his own bands in progressive rock, rock and jazz. Verneri first established himself as the leader of the Ilmiliekki Quartet, a band that has won a number of awards, including the prestigious Teosto Award for original composition. Pohjola soon was seen as a rising star on the Finnish scene when he picked up the coveted gong as Musician of the Year at the 2004 Pori Jazz Festival.

As with many great horn players, Pohjola has a distinctive tone that has a deep-reaching purity and lyricism. His highly melodic improvisation is complemented by personal compositions characterized by unforgettable and imaginative themes, which go beyond any shaky idea of "Nordic jazz". Verneri Pohjola is truly a progressive artist with a firm hand in popular culture and is one of the most exciting and original artists of his generation.

THE DEAD DON´T DREAM project
In May 2020, he released The Dead Don't Dream, which combines work on his previous three albums with complete cohesion, individualism and creativity. This album is a work of art, built from all the influences that have shaped Verneri's life to date. There is a balance of color, light and dynamics, a deep sense of cooperation and sharing a common purpose and as a discoverer of sound. Music balances freedom and composition, expression and voice. It is a defining work of art for Verneri, for Finnish culture and a statement of intent for an artist immersed in the world of European jazz.
