As a festival producer, I really enjoyed being able to see the festival from the inside. In that way, I was able to identify a measure or two that are transferable to my own work, in everything from coordination of the volunteers, artist management and organization of the guest programme.
From: Oslo Jazz Festival (Norway)
To: Tampere Jazz Happening (Finland)
Dates: 30 October - 06 November 2023

The staff exchange at Tampere Jazz Happening has been very inspiring and has given me valuable experience and insight in a festival not so different from my own. The team of Minnakaisa, Juhamatti, Eija, Katariina and Mikhaela has welcomed me with the most warmth and hospitality. By being included in the festival staff during the days before and under the festival, I’ve learnt a lot about the organization of Tampere Jazz Happening, and the calm disposition of the Finns! I’ve never seen such calm festival staff throughout the most hectic period of the year. Impressive, I must say.

The first couple of days in Tampere I got to know the team, the venues, and the organization. Minnakaisa took the time to get me well acquainted with the festival's structure and vision, ideas and concepts. When the international guests arrived the first day of the festival, I was able to function as a co-host together with Minnakaisa and assisted her in the ways that she needed. Throughout the week, my schedule consisted of visiting the Moomin Museum (a must when in Finland), Finnish sauna with the international guests, and of course: Music! I was particularly pleased to have been able to catch the concerts with Linda Fredriksson, Verneri Pojhola and Goran Kajfeš.

Tampere Jazz Happening is a very cozy and warm festival, despite the not so warm weather. I think they manage to greet their guests, musicians, and volunteer in the most unique and including way. As a festival producer, I really enjoyed being able to see the festival from the inside. In that way, I was able to identify a measure or two that are transferable to my own work, in everything from coordination of the volunteers, artist management and organization of the guest programme.

I bring many good ideas and a lot of inspiration back home to Oslo, and I am very grateful for this opportunity given by both Europe Jazz Network and Tampere Jazz Happening. Thank you!
