From 05 May 2014 to 15 May 2014
Musicians:
Fulco Ottervanger

Lieven Van Pee
Description:

In the space between expectation and surprise, you will find De Beren Gieren, providing robust
evidence that gold can still be mined from the union of piano, bass and drums. Based on the
compositions of Fulco Ottervanger, the young trio created in 2009 seeks for music and for each other.
This is the key to their music ; the challenge of using the power of improvisation on the quest for a new
form.

In 2012 they released their debut-cd Wirklich Welt so and were offered a residency at the Vooruit in
Ghent. The band is selected for the young European showcase festival 12 points.

In 2013, De Beren Gieren is showcased at Jazzahead. Renowned Downbeat journalist Josef Woodard
named the band “a contemporary-minded and witty piano trio, one of the highlights at the Jazzahead!”
Downbeat, July 2013.

They just released their new CD A Ravelling in october 2013 which received very enthusiastic press
reviews: “De Beren Gieren present with “A raveling” a singular mix of jazz, rock, and classical music
inspiration. [...] Pianist Fulco Ottervanger, bassist Lieven Van Pee and drummer Simon Segers make
great music full of relativism, humor and all of it in an off-beat style. Their strange combinations with
this unusual touch bring this fresh effect." De Standard, September 2013.

De Beren Gieren also engage in collaborations with internationally renowned musicians. They played
with Jan Klare, Jean-Yves Évrard and Hasse Poulsen and in March they climbed the stage with
clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst and cellist Ernst Reijseger. In December they play with
composer/clarinetist Louis Sclavis, followed by a collaboration with Portuguese trumpet player Susana
Santos Silva next year.
