GIORGIO OCCHIPINTI

Description:
Giorgio Occhipinti is a pianist and composer, was born in Ragusa on 12 June 1969. Since his childhood he devoted himself to the study of piano and playing the drum and flute through the band of San Giorgio di Ragusa in the period from 1974 to 1989. Around the 80's he took part in many exhibitions organized by G. M. I., Amici della Musica, Municipalities and Provinces, music schools (e. g. The Pentagram in Ragusa), etc.. and at the same time began private studies based on improvisation (from jazz to avant-garde) contemplating various forms of jazz. He studied composition and harmony (especially focusing on Shoenberg's treatise on harmony and dodecaphony, listening guided by ancient music, classical music and ending in contemporary music and jazz. In October 1989 he took part in the Paris Jazz Festival during the "International Jazz Piano Competition" dedicated to Martial Solal. The same year he was invited by the saxophone player Lee Konitz, one of the world's greatest jazz musicians to do a Sicilian tour (including the Brass Group festival of Catania in which the concert was recorded live) and a festival in Salerno in 1990. He worked with actress Lidya Alfonsi, and composed the soundtrack for some of her recitals. He has been a member and leader of some historical Italian and foreign jazz bands: first of all the December Thirty Jazz Trio, founded in 1989 together with the double bassist Giuseppe Guarrella and drummer Francesco Branciamore. From January 1992 until May 2000 he was a member of one of the most important Italian groups: the Pino Minafra Sud Ensemble, voted several times in referendum by the Italian and international critics at the top of the charts as the best group and the best recording on CD (Top Jazz Magazine "Musica Jazz" and in France the CD "Sudori" in 1996 best CD of the year). In 1993 he founded the Festival Ibleo del Jazz "... a sort of general state of avant-garde jazz music seen from the South" (as the critic F. Versienti writes in the daily newspaper Il Manifesto) and he is its artistic director. In the same year he created the first group of which he is leader, pianist and composer, the Giorgio Occhipinti Hereo Nonetto. With this group he recorded the cd "The Kaos Legend" produced by the Russian Leo Feigin (BBC) for the label Leo Records and today it has become a cult album for musicians and music listeners. In 1994 took part in an innovative group with the Roman saxophonist Eugenio Colombo and Giuseppe Guarrella: the Triple Project. In 1995 it was voted by Italian critics in the referendum "Top Jazz" held by the magazine Musica Jazz as the second new and best talent of the year. Also in 1995 he founded the European Duo with the French double bassist Joelle Léandre, musician and composer of great importance for contemporary music (written for her by Luigi Nono, Giacinto Scelsi, etc...) and for jazz and improvised, avant-garde world music. One of the columns the new creative music born in Europe in the 70's and 80's. In 1999 he founded the Duet Sequences with the clarinettist
