Welcome to the 45th Moers festival!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The 45th edition of moers festival is the eleventh for me as an Artistic Director and the third at the new festival hall.

The festival’s financial situation remains under pressure, even though we were hoping the festival would finally experience more stability at its new venue. Despite the extra funding for three years by the federal government we are still unable to revive festival projects which we had to discontinue for the past years (‘Concerts in the Dark’, ‘Mini Moers’ etc.). However, we hope they can be resumed next year.

The world out there has not changed for the better, either. Yet, it was again a great pleasure to create the festival programme. Moers festival remains quite contrary to this world where people re-erect border fences. Maybe it can help to show that our future is only worthwhile if we live in a world without borders.

This year, we could finally make several projects happen which I had been dreaming of for a long time. Among these is the project with Icelandic musician and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson who will show his first movie ‘End of Summer’ at the festival, the ‘Black Sun’ project by Trio Harriet Tubman with Cassandra Wilson who will perform in a rather different musical setting (‘Yes, the red guitar returns.’), the much debated Dawn of Midi Trio from Brooklyn, and last but not least the projects with Carla Kihlstedt (‘The Real Me’) and Becca Stevens (with English Jack of all trades Jacob Collier). It is plain obvious that today’s music is changing tremendously. We feel it’s a great privilege that we are here to witness it all at the new festival hall, without any compromises. Maybe that’s why this year’s programme planning features so many young artists, and turned out even more contemplative than usual.

I would like to thank everyone who offered their continued support for the festival over the years. I also would like to thank those who have only discovered the festival in recent years and have supported it as visitors or in other ways.

I wish you all a great time at moers festival!
