Seven days of Danish jazz in London

Denmark is well-known for Borgen and bacon in the UK, but perhaps less known for their vibrant and varied jazz scene. Now you can experience Sounds of Denmark, a remarkable seven day festival at one of London’s premier venues, the PizzaExpress Jazz Club. The festival is a new and ambitious exporting project made in collaboration between JazzDanmark, PizzaExpress Jazz Club, Sue Edwards Management and The Royal Danish Embassy. Ten Danish groups comprising over thirty musicians will complete the programme running from 16th – 22nd of September 2016.

From the space-funk of Morten Schantz Godspeed (feat. Julian Argüelles and Anton Eger) to the free-bop of MAdHAs and the sublime vocals of Sinne Eeg and Cathrine Legardh (with Brian Kellock), the festival represents a broad cross-spectrum of jazz styles. Performances from two contemporary piano trios Hess/AC/Hess Spacelab and Simon Toldam Trio sit next to the melodic chamber-jazz of Maniscalco/Bigoni/Solborg (with UK guest Evan Parker) and the Scandinavian-tinged saxophonist Jan Harbeck’s quartet. Girls in Airports present an evening of urban-folk-soundscapes next to New York/Copenhagen underground dance music pioneers Hess is More who is a must-see.
