Anna Filipieva, Jazz.Ru (Russia):

Pervoe Solnce «Road To The Horizon» (ArtBeat Music)

album trailer on BandCamp

Anna Filipieva comments:
The new album by Pervoe Solnce (literally, The First Sun,) a collective led by composer/vibist Vladimir Goloukhov, goes beyond the genre borders. The music, rooted in the diversity of intonations of Russian music and rich in imagery, sounds simple and accessible.

Alexander Hawkins / Elaine Mitchener Quartet «Uproot» (Intakt)

buy on Discogs | album on the label’s website

Henning Bolte comments:
Mitchener unites traces of Jeanne Lee, Betty Carter, Cathy Berberian, Brigitte Fontaine, Anca Parghel and even Billie Holiday in a highly fascinating, movable and pointed way in her highly dynamic, brisk and boisterous stage action. It is so much more than just vocalizing and singing. She can switch rapidly between leading and following and always manages to take the audience with her.

Maciej Obara Quartet «Unloved » (ECM)

buy in iTunes | trailer on YouTube | buy on Amazon

Paweł Brodowski comments:
Tender lyricism, and impassioned, fiery, powerful playing. This is a stunning ECM debut by the Maciej Obara Quartet, a Polish-Norwegian combination which includes the leader on alto saxophone, Dominik Wania on piano, Ole Morten Vaagan on bass and Gard Nilssen on drums. Recorded in Rainbow Studio in Oslo and produced by Manfred Eicher, it features Obara’s original compositions, with the exception of the title ballad, which was penned by Krzysztof Komeda. Next to Tomasz Stanko and Marcin Wasilewski, Maciej Obara is the 3rd Polish jazz leader to have joined the fold of the prestigious and influential label.
