Doek Composes

Doek

During lockdown Doek came up with a new project – Doek Composes. Each of the 10 Doek musicians can compose a piece for all 10 musicians to play. I might be a score, a fragment of music, written instructions – anything to inspire improvisation. The interpretations of Eric Boeren’s piece will be the first to be released first on 1 October on the Doek RAW label. With artwork by Lena Czerniawska.

What is Doek RAW? It’s a pay what you want, download only label documenting various projects from the members of Doek. The latest releases are Feecho – Kaja Draksler and Onno Govaert – live at the Vancouver international Jazz Festival, and a 2003 Doek Festival recording from Boerenbond dedicated to Cor Fuhler, a Doek founding member who sadly passed away last July.

Another lockdown project, Musicians Talk, has seen Eric Boeren interviewing musicians with whom he has worked over the years. So far there have been 6 round table discussions with bassists, drummers, guitarists, trumpet players, pianists and trombone players. Eric is now busy editing the interviews, which will be released on You Tube and as podcasts.

Luckily regulations have eased up and we are looking forward to presenting 7 live concerts between now and the end of the year in collaboration with Space is The Place, De Ruimte and Sexyland. And in collaboration with the Bimhuis we will present a monthly series – The Impro Train - from November to February, in which a Doek group will play 3 sets in an evening. Featuring duo Hoogland|Bennink & Wilbert de Joode solo, Oliver|Stadhouders|Vitols|Rosaly|’t Hart, Sylla|Hoogland|Rosaly and Hupata!  It’s going to be exciting to hear what musical heights they will reach!
