RANDAL CORSEN SYMBIOSOS
PRESENTATION CD SYMBIOSIS
Randal Corsen piano, Glenn Gaddum jr. bas, Mark Schilders drums, Vernon Chatlein percussie
Curacao-born pianist Randal Corsen has the unique talent of being able to incorporate the typical rhythms of his island, and the rest of the Caribbean region, into his jazz music. In his new band, Symbiosis, he plays with the most talented young musicians from the Dutch language regions. Because of their divergent backgrounds they create a shimmering combination of modern jazz and Caribbean music, breaking through all the stylistic clichés. Randal Corsen won the Edison Jazz Award in 2004, has performed with several other jazz artists, including Roy Hargrove and composed an opera for Tania Kross.

WORKSHOP & ROUGH DIAMONDS
8PM WORKSHOP led by Arnold Dooyeweerd 10PM SZOSO LAKATOS QUARTET & ENTER THE KOENIVERSE Host: Jasper Blom
The Bimhuis workshop is freely accessible to both musicians and audience. All instruments, including vocals, are welcome. Advanced registration is not necessary. Musicians who’d like to follow the workshop are required to be present and ready to play at 8PM. It’s possible to come and listen first without taking part.
The subject is improvisation, or what happens when you perform without deciding beforehand what to play. About the level: participants will have to realize that this workshop takes place at an international venue, in the presence of an audience. To participate it helps to have a reasonable level of musicianship and the ability to not to stumble over one’s own limitations while performing in front of the audience.
Following the introduction of new participants the workshop will start with an exercise which picks up on the previous workshop. The subject of the exercise could remain a theme throughout the rest of the evening, but that’s not necessary. Everything will be played by ear and the emphasis is on ensemble playing.
The music will be created on the spot as a result of the players’ contributions. Most of the time there will be performances by small groups, with the remaining participants as listeners. Directly following a section, the workshop leader will provide criticism and suggestions, and sometimes a section will be repeated to try out the provided tips.

THE BAD PLUS
SERIE JAZZ & LISTEN TO THIS
Ethan Iverson piano, Reid Anderson bas, David King drums
The American jazz trio The Bad Plus believes that musical rules are there to be broken. Aside from original works the trio plays covers of divergent artists, from Blondie to Nirvana, as well as Stravinsky. These three Americans have an exceptional reputation for their eccentric attitude and their hyper-energetic performances; they’re adored by fans of (indie-)rock, pop, avant-garde music and jazz all over the world. ‘The Bad Plus glories in its unique self-styled idiom; jazz with humor and the power of a rock band’ (NRC).
On their latest CD, Made Possible, which appeared autumn 2012, they stretch the boundaries of their sound, with electronic beats – played live by drummer David King- and influences from minimal music. During this gig they will play a broad selection from their unique oeuvre.
(The previously announced performance of Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps has been cancelled due to restrictions with regard to the European performance rights for the adaptation of the piece.)
Before and after the show there will be a sideshow in co-operation with Amsterdam jazz platform TryTone with performances and DJs at the Listen to This café on the Foyer Decks.
Kaartverkoop via de kassa van het muziekgebouw, 020-788 2000 of online via www.muziekgebouw.nl

JOCHEN RUECKERT QUARTET FEAT. MARK TURNER
Mark Turner tenorsax, Lage Lund gitaar, Matt Penman bas, Jochen Rueckert drums
Since he moved from Cologne to New York 15 years ago, drummer Jochen Rueckert has been inseparable from double bassist Matt Penman. They have collaborated with several famous jazz guitarists, including Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Aside from guitarist Lage Lund, it’s saxophonist Mark Turner who plays a star role in Rueckert’s quartet. The subtle, rhythmically layered compositions by the band leader are interchanged with songs by Herbie Hancock and Depeche Mode. ‘You can sense the intense simpatico and conviction among the four New Yorkers’ (The Telegraph).

SOO CHO JASS UNITED
PRESENTATIE CD PANDORA
Soo Cho piano/composities, Javier Girotto sax/flute, Sven Happel bas, Jasper Van Hulten drums
Pianist Soo Cho tones down the muscular and acrobatic playing of many of her young male colleagues. ‘I prefer a feminine approach: delicate, intimate, soft and beautiful’, she explained to the NRC Handelsblad newspaper. She still manages to reach a level of intensity, much like her great example Keith Jarrett. The Korean born artist has been playing piano since a very young age. After she discovered jazz, she moved to The Netherlands to study this music. On Soo Cho’s third album, Pandora, she plays with her new band Jass United, featuring saxophone player Javier Girotto.

MYRA MELFORD’S SNOWY EGRET
AFTERWARDS: NIGHT CONCERT WITH PETE SWANSON SOLO & RUTGER ZUYDERVERLD/GERRI
Ron Miles (trumpet), Liberty Ellman (guitar), Stomu Takeishi (acoustic bass guitar), Tyshawn Sorey (drums) and Myra Melford (piano/melodica)
Myra Melford’s piano playing sparkles like the blues, enchants like eastern music and illicits wonder like the great classical works. This unique blend is also present in her compositions, which arouse both emotion and the intellect. Snowy Egret follows up on previous ensembles, which gave way to Dave Douglas among others. The new group features such remarkable talents as drummer Tyshawn Sorey. ‘Melford is a crafty original whose playing is filled with muscle, brains and poetic spark’ (Time Out).
Afterwards a late night concert by Pete Swanson, Gerri Jäger and Rutger Zuydervelt, free admission for the visitors of Myra Melford.

RUTGER ZUYDERVELT & GERRI JÄGER
Rutger Zuydervelt elektronica, Gerri Jäger drums
‘I think of my music as being high-anxiety’ (The continuous
partial everywhere) Swanson, former half of the electronic noise band Yellow Swans. He currently makes intense music with the aid of tapes and analogye machines, both extreme and spectacular in equal measure. His music balances between total upheaval and complete acquiescence.
The second performance is a new collaboration between Gerri Jäger (Knalpot) on drums and Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) on electronics. They will make their live debut as a duo this evening.
Afterwards Filosofische Stilte and Juha van ‘t Zelfde in the cafe.
