ALCÁCER DO JAZZ 2021

AUGUST 6 – 15
ALCÁCER DO SAL

A new jazz festival celebrating Portuguese jazz along local cultural heritage in Alcácer do Sal and Comporta

Alcácer do Jazz
is a new jazz festival organized by the cultural non-profit association Associação Sons da Lusofonia (already known for the Lisbon-based jazz festival Festa do Jazz) in collaboration with the Municipality of Alcácer do Sal, in Alentejo.

The artistic director for the new festival is the saxophone player Carlos Martins, who is also in charge of the Festa do Jazz and will be bringing the experience of almost 20 years of Festa do Jazz to Alcácer do Jazz.

The first edition of the festival is taking place from the 6th to 15th August 2021 in Alcácer do Sal, a city on the banks of the Sado river with a very rich and diverse cultural history as well as the neighboring Comporta, a beautiful coastal village positioned between the beach and rice fields, both located in the Setúbal district, about 1 hour south of Lisbon.

The inspiration for the new festival is drawn from the different cultures that crossed paths in Alcácer (Arabs, Africans, Europeans, etc) and contributed to its rich cultural heritage. It aims at celebrating the diversity both in the past and the present by showing what is done today without avoiding the living confrontation of different languages that also reflect different collective identities.

Alcácer do Jazz wants to present a diverse selection of contemporary Portuguese jazz artists coming from different backgrounds, styles and generations, off the beaten tracks of urban centers. Apart from the concerts it also wants to create informal forums for debates and presentation of local initiatives, creating a feeling of belonging to an increasingly broad and inclusive community, as it is the practice in all of Sons da Lusofonia productions.

It is also worth noting that half of the the festival program consists of female-lead bands or female contributors, both in the concerts and the debates, consolidating the position of Sons da Lusofonia on the issue of gender equality and inclusion.

The Alcácer do Jazz program includes concerts by Mário Laginha, Carlos Martins, Marta Hugon, Beatriz Nunes, Maria João, Salvador Sobral and the Barradas-Toscano-Pereira trio. The festival will be closed with “Jazz at the Marching Bands”, the final presentation of a artistic residency program with two local marching bands from Alcácel do Sal, aiming at accompanying girls and boys who are engaged in local brass and marching bands to the world of jazz and improvisation. This our Jazz for Young People Program. Apart from the main concerts, Alcácer do Jazz promotes moments of meeting with the community and of debate that focus on the topics of “Mediterranean Music and Cultures”, and “ The Jazz of Mathematics ”.

All events included in the Alcácer do Jazz’s programme are open-air and free of charge, subject to the capacity of the venues without the need for prior reservation, in compliance with the current Covid-19 restrictions.
