This year’s Jazz Festival Ljubljana promises to be a vibrant meeting between jazz generations, bringing together legendary players such as Archie Shepp and Reggie Workman (in a tribute to John Coltrane) and outstanding young musicians the likes of singer Emilia Martensson and guitarist Susanna Risberg. The impressive roster of performers features diverse jazz practices, including some of the hottest British names (Shabaka Hutchings, Yussef Kaamal, Alexander Hawkins), Berlin jazz scene protagonists (Lucia Cadotsch, Amok Amor, Philm), double piano concerts (Kris Davis & Craig Taborn), standout trumpeters from New York (Ambrose Akinmusure, Peter Evans, Amir ElSaffar, Nate Wooley) performing with their own bands or filling the ranks of other line-ups (e.g. Jason Moran, Mette Rasmussen and Nasheet Waits will be teaming up and combining resources in special projects).

To fire up the crowds, we’ve brought in some gifted Slovenian musicians active at home or abroad – Artbeaters, Kaja Draksler (with her latest Hearth Quartet), Dre Hočevar (with the Nate Wooley Quartet), Igor Lumpert (with his Quartet), Cene Resnik (with his Trio), Boštjan Simon (with Velkro). Composed of musicians from Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey and the US, the Karkhana Sextet – the opening gig of the Festival – will herald the European Jazz Conference co-organised with the Europe Jazz Network that’s scheduled for September. The Festival will conclude on Sunday night with the amazing Shabaka & The Ancestors.

Also worth looking forward to is the Festival’s diversified side programme consisting of exhibitions, discussions, workshops and jazz chill-out sessions in the Council of Europe Park immediately adjacent to Cankarjev dom.
