Autumn 2018 Jazz Series launches at Turner Sims Southampton

Turner Sims Southampton, today launches its 2018 Autumn Jazz Series, welcoming a host of internationally acclaimed artists, as well as exciting new projects and partnerships.

The season launches in style with one of the rising stars of the European jazz scene: Danish-born Kathrine Windfeld will be performing with her sensational 15-piece Scandinavian orchestra of razor-sharp ensemble musicians and soloists (Wednesday 19 September). Berlin-based pianist Julia Hülsmann brings her renowned Trio to Turner Sims for the first time on Friday 5 October for an exclusive UK gig featuring music from her latest ECM Records release Sooner And Later.

We welcome back Mercury-nominated Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur, who will play music from their new Edition Records album Wonder Trail (Friday 12 October) in the first event to mark the appointment of Edition as Associate Label for the venue. The second Associate Label event features an outstanding double bill from saxophonist Tom Barford and guitarist Rob Luft, both winners of the prestigious Kenny Wheeler Award (Saturday 26 January). Every ticketbuyer for the double bill will receive an Edition compilation CD as part of their purchase.

Celebrating the partnership between Billie Holiday and Buck Clayton, the Buck Clayton Legacy Band (led by bassist and broadcaster Alyn Shipton, presenter of Jazz Record Requests on BBC Radio 3) is joined by vocalist and brilliant Billie Holiday interpreter Julia Biel, to explore that musical treasure trove (Friday 19 October). Mexican pianist Alex Mercado makes his first ever UK performance as part of University of Southampton’s Mexico Week, showcasing music from his recent album Paisajes (Friday 26 October). Norwegian pianist and composer Tord Gustavsen brings his Trio to Turner Sims (Friday 2 November) with his latest ECM Records release. Another ECM Records artist, extraordinary pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch brings his group Ronin to Turner Sims for the first time (Friday 9 November) to present music from his new release Awase.

New jazz supergroup Rymden, featuring the combined talents of Bugge Wesseltoft, Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund, heads to Turner Sims on Friday 23 November. These three innovative forces in European jazz created parallel music history from the 1990s onwards with the groups New Conception Of Jazz and e.s.t. (esbjorn svensson trio). The music of the new trio is based on three elements: melancholic and atmospheric songwriting, dramatically charged rhythms and virtuously played jazz of the highest level. Jingle Bell Jazz (Sunday 16 December) is a jazz-filled interactive concert for the festive season, suitable for all the family, and promises all your favourite Christmas melodies, whilst the new year kicks off with renowned vocalist and broadcaster China Moses. Having taken the jazz world by storm with her incisive voice and high voltage personality, China performs music from her 2017 release Nightintales (Saturday 12 January).

Turner Sims is also delighted to announce Edition Records, who celebrate their tenth anniversary in 2018, as the venue’s first Associate Label. Across two years Turner Sims will work with Edition Records to profile some of its well-known names alongside rising stars.

Edition Records CEO and Artist Director, Dave Stapleton, says:
