A trumpet that knows how to capture both the polar ice caps and the burning desert sand, that can portray surging crowds just as well as total solitude, that loses itself but always finds the way back again� Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer has his own very individual sound, influenced as much by the poetry of Scandinavian nature as by electronic calculation, and last but not least by colleagues like Miles Davis und Jon Hassell. But more than anything else, Molvaer has himself. Listening to him play, it\'s easy to forget that his instrument is a trumpet.

Molvaer\'s new album \"Baboon Moon\" marks the self-assured new start of a musician who has already travelled a long way. He began his career in the bands of Jon Christensen and Arild Andersen, but gradually broke out more and more beyond the confines of jazz, starting with his 1997 album \"Khmer\". His musical journey took him through a wide variety of styles, and he tried out different degrees of abstraction along the way. He experimented together with musicians like Bill Laswell, Sidsel Endresen and Eivind Aarset, and surrounded himself with DJ\'s and VJ\'s, but he also worked on his own. His language of expression remained vivid throughout. On his last album, \"Hamada\", he switched to and fro between very harmonious and extremely brutal passages, while on \"Baboon Moon\" these two opposite poles blend into a unified whole again.

In order to arrive at this point, he formed a new band. His two fellow players on \"Baboon Moon\" have come to jazz \'through the back door\', as it were. Stian Westerhus is one of Europe\'s most innovative, and in the meantime most sought-after guitarists. A former member of the post-rock band Jaga Jazzist, he runs the industrial-improv duo Monolithic together with Motorpsycho drummer Kenneth Kapstad. For Westerhus, the electric guitar is not just an instrument: it\'s a whole orchestra, a creative museum of physical and spiritual possibilities for producing electronic sounds. He manipulates his instrument with every conceivable material and effect, and even produces indefinable sounds by shouting into the strings. Erland Dahlen has played his way into the hearts of alternative-rock fans as drummer of the Norwegian psychoblues band Madrugada. He contributed this deep and earthy but also progressive blues feeling to Eivind Aarset\'s Sonic Codex Orchestra first of all, and now he brings it to Molvaer\'s trio. NPM was born in 1960 on the little island of Sula (Norway). From an early age his father - jazz clarinettist and saxophonist, Jens Arne Molv�r - introduced NPM to jazz, although his musical diet would become increasingly diverse. After playing in school bands and local clubs, he left Sula in 1979 to study music at the Trondheim Conservatory, where he began developing his singular style, and proceeded to gain a reputation as one of Norway\'s emerging new talents.His remarkable ease in handling the often-contrary conventions of pop, rock, funk, and modern jazz ensured a strong interest in both acoustic and electric music. This chameleon-like ability soon established him as a much sought-after musician in Oslo, which ultimately led to his a colourful and diverse curriculum vitae as a sideman. During his time with acclaimed jazz combo, Masqualero, NPM was introduced to Manfred Eicher, who welcomed him into his prestigious and much-lauded roster. Alongside the three ECM Masqualero releases, NPM recorded many classic studio sessions for ECM with artists such as Robyn Schulkowsky, Marilyn Mazur, Jon Balke\'s Oslo 13, and Sidsel Endresen. Ricardo Baldacci Trio is a jazz combo that has excited the the evenings in São Paulo City, Brazil, playing in numerous events, respecting the tradition of swing-jazz style from 1930s and 1940s.

Heavily influenced by entertainers like Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, and guitarists such as John Pizzarelli, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt and Barney Kessel, the group has in its repertoire the songs of the Great American Songbook.

Ricardo Baldacci, singer and guitarist, after a decade working as a marketing executive and amateur musician decided in 2010 to devote himself exclusively to music. In the middle of that year, Baldacci found the double bass player, Ricardo Ramos, an educator and a jazz aficionado. This friendship, born under their studying sessions, made them put together a show with the songs of Nat King Cole Trio. Ricardo Ramos is one of a few musicians in Brazil who has an ideology of teaching music following the chronological evolution jazz music.

After a period of one year with maestro Roberto Bomilcar on the piano,

Baldacci and Ramos invited Hercules Gomes to the position, an award-winning pianist, who had played in important national and international jazz festivals. At the first half of 2011 the Ricardo Baldacci Trio formation had been set. The group then began a dedicated work of arrangements on its swing repertoire.

Baldacci, Ramos and Gomes are faithful to the style they represent, and perform a joyful music, with a classy feel.

In 2011, the group performed on major television broadcast at Rede Record (Tudo É Possível Program) and TV Cultura´s pilot program Cultura Jazz. The trio also played in numerous venues such as Villa dos Ipês, Bar des Arts, Vila do Bosque, Espaço Lodutti, Hyatt, Renaissence, Tivoli Mofarrej and Tom Jazz. Several brands have chosen the work of the Ricardo Baldacci Trio for their events including: HSBC, L\'Oreal, Allergan, Columbia Logistics, Singapore Airlines and John Deer.

The trio has released In May the CD Songs to Love Swing which was acclaimed by the critics. American bass player and swing jazz icon, Martin Pizzarelli has described it as "great interpretation of classic songs, happiness lives on this CD”. Singer and radio host Zé Luis Mazziotti has said "A delightful CD ". Radio Eldorado’s producer Paulo May’s stated “What a good vibe”.

Today, the group is finishing the production of a DVD with live performance. It shows the essence of the trio’s stage vibe. The project, as a suggestion of Martin Pizzarelli, was produced in partnership with one of the best producers in the history of jazz, Jim Czak, owner of the Nola Studios in New York.

The trio has performed regularly, recreating the atmosphere of the drumless trios from the 1940s. The Terraço Itália Restaurant in São Paulo has been the place of frequent performances on Wednesdays, as well as jazz clubs like All of Jazz and Madeleine.

Danças Ocultas" are four young accordionsts from Agueda near Porto who are among the most innovative and most exciting representatives of contemporary Portuguese music. For some years now they have been rising on the international music scene – with an apparently very simple concept: quiet, lyrical, more or less traditional, with only four diatonic accordions. The quartet’s name has nothing to do with esoteric worlds but means that Dancas Ocultas play music for dances that still have to be invented. “Impressionistic Folk” is maybe the best label for this timeless art music: minimalist, profound sound paintings full of unexpected turns and noble melancholy. Very special music – impossible to escape its magnetism.

One of the first supporters of Dancas Ocultas was Gabriel Gomes, the accordionist of Portugal’s most famous world music band Madredeus. He motivated them to explore their own sound worlds. Their collaboration with choreographer Paul Ribeiro, regular appearances at international festivals and a highly acclaimed showcase at Womex 2010 have brought them international recognition far beyond the Portuguese borders.

Imagination Quartet

Imagination Quartet is an expressive music project launched in 2009. Though it clearly relies on classic jazz esthetics, it does not let itself be trapped in music standards and common expectations.

On the 21^st of November 2011, Imagination Quartet released their debut album under the label of Anaconda Productions. The album, available on the Polish market and in online distribution, summarizes the hitherto activity of the band. It includes 11 original compositions, explicitly basing on jazz esthetics, while retaining its special, unique character.

Drawing extensively on improvised, experimental music, IQ plays energetic, passionate, direct jazz which also surprises the listener with humorous taunts. Yuri Honing Wired Paradise | Jazz In Motion Records (2010)

Dutch tenor saxophonist Yuri Honing is nothing if not versatile; in the last decade he has recorded with pianist Paul Bley, bassist
Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian (Challenge, 2001); tackle Radiohead and Wayne Shorter compositions with the 51-piece
Metropole Orchestra, conducted by Vince Mendoza, with Symphonic (Challenge, 2006); and interpret Franz Schubert\'s Winterreise
song cycle, based on the poetic lyrics of Wilhelm Muller, alongside pianist Nora Mulder. White Tiger shows another facet of
Honing\'s craft, the electric quintet Wired Paradise, and this live set, recorded during its 2009 world tour, is inspired by Indian author
Aravind Adiga\'s Booker Prize-winning novel, The White Tiger (2008).
It would have been interesting to learn how Adiga\'s novel inspired music that was largely recorded on the group\'s first two studio
albums—Temptation (Jazz in Motion, 2006) and Meet Your Demons (Jazz in Motion, 2008)—but the lack of liner notes requires
the assumption that the book\'s emotional impact about India, where Honing has played many times before, made its way into the
performances, which were mostly recorded in Mumbai.
Strikingly, for an ensemble that features two electric guitarists (Frank Mobus and Stef van Es), much of the music is spare in
nature, with an emphasis on mood and nuance rather than virtuosity, though the group\'s sound is paradoxically powerful—a case
of less is more. Honing\'s tenor has something of the pure tone of Jan Garbarek , and the lovely vocal quality of a balladeer. A
gorgeous rendition of Björk\'s enchanting "Isobel," and David Bowie\'s "Space Oddity," follow the respective vocal melodies closely
before Honing peels away, following his muse with muscular, searching solos which are all the more powerful, given the almost
minimalist setting from which they emerge. This intoxicating potion of minimalist soundscapes and visceral power comes together
perfectly on "Petrae," whose lyrical, slightly melancholic melody takes wing when guitar and saxophone break loose. The slow
groove, from bassist Mark Haanstra and drummer Joost Lijbaart, never quickens, instead, rising in intensity. Similarly, the smoldering
"Isobel" bursts into flames before receding softly and "Rollo Thomasi" pads quietly either side of a sizzling guitar solo. The mold is
broken on the punk-inspired energy of "Meet Your Demons," which is as short and sharp as a tequila slammer. "Tenzing Norgay,"
a nod to the Nepalese conqueror of Mount Everest, sees Honing\'s most explorative solo of the set, atop a subtle, dub-like groove.
All the compositions are characterized by simple, seductive melodies, and the set closer, "Zitelle," is no exception. Mobus and
Honing stretch out on another slow-burning piece adorned with under-the-radar psychedelic touches.
Wired Paradise is not the only group to mix jazz with pop, rock and punk, but the refreshing, disciplined approach and the at times
almost epic nature of the compositions mark it out as one of the more original groups mining diverse musical genres. White Tiger
is a beautiful, compelling recording, much like the book which inspired Honing.

Groove, groove, groove is his musical imperative – that’s what Yuri Honing tells me. On the occasion of the festival The Hague Jazz,
we are sitting, relaxed, in the cantina of the World Forum in the Hague, eating asparagus and other delicacies. Wired Paradise had
just finished its power performance and their impressive wall of sound still resonated inside me. At the center of the group stands Yuri
Honing’s full and yet transparent saxophone beam. He is escorted by the two very different guitarists, Frank Möbus and Stef van Es,
who throw each other musically explosive balls in a question and answer game without finding an upper limit of the Richter scale.
Here, the codes of pop/rock/funk meet up with the idioms of jazz, in both an intuitive and balanced manner. Supporting it all, a dream
duo of the Dutch rhythm scene conveys the foundation of a timeless understanding of jazz: Mark Haanstra on the electronic bass and
Joost Lijbaart on the drums. Wired Paradise throws out beats more oriented around the popular four-four rather than swing-like
ternary sparks. The concept takes hold every second of the evening. Yuri Honing crosses limits, he is one who has uncovered the
limitlessness of jazz in his dealings with other styles and ethnic musical cultures. So, to create his own sound, he makes use of all
musical genres. David Bowie’s “Major Tom” (live in concert) and Schubert’s “Winterreise” (on the CD) take their place next to his own
compositions without causing any trouble. In his youth, jazz was the counter-concept to his everyday musical life – he talks about his
classically directed, musically professional family, who suggested he pursue a career as a classical concert pianist. In an act of
liberation, he dissociated himself from the piano and chose an instrument and a music that appeared the furthest from classical music:
the saxophone and jazz. For Yuri Honing, jazz is a feeling and lifestyle rolled up into one. The external forms of groove, harmony and
melody always face the inner ‘form’ of a linear atmosphere – gladly using electronic tonal colors. With Wired Paradise, we have to deal
with groovy idylls. One feels his overwhelming desire to experiment in the triangle of pop, jazz and classic without any kind of finger
pointing. High culture is really only a question of perspective for Yuri Honing.

Thanks to his congenial musicians in Wired Paradise, Yuri Honing is able to create modern parallel worlds in which musical interaction
generates its own life of all the elements through candor and suspense.

Jaipur Maharaja Brass Band created this stunning experience by selecting the most talented muscians from the best local bands in Rajasthan.

The group consists of a female gypsy dancer, Fakir juggler and seven muscians who play a wide range of brass instruments. The band has created its own unique style,combining indian melodies and the powerful traditional folk music of Rajasthan with popular themes from Bollywood films and even Hindustani Classical music.

BaianaSystem is experiencing a new sound system with the interaction of the Baianan guitar and rhythmic basses.This original instrument\'s history is closely linked to the Bahia\'s Salvador Carnaval. During the 1940s the Baianan guitar came to steal the show to the percussions with its famous "Trios electricos". BaianaSystem\'s new album, soon to be released in Europe has been widely accepted by the general public and the media all around the world, particularly during the Womex Showcase festival held in Copenhagen last October 2011.
The Brazilian creative DJ Chico Correa gives a new face to the Baianan scene while the singer takes you on a ride in his city with his lyrics and puts into music the color and rhythm of everyday life. This is a revolutionary band to be heard right now!

The fiery and intense character of Argentine music, mixed with the refinement of Japanese musical tradition provide the raw materials for this exceptional quartet, created from the meeting of two major symbols of Japanese jazz and two inventive Argentine musicians from the European scene. The mind-blowing virtuosity of the violinist Aska Kaneko – a true star in her native Japan – is well served by Gerardo Di Giusto’s sophisticated and colorful compositions. Creating rhythms, in all their subtle distinctions, which respond to this ensemble in perfect harmony, weaving in the surprising conversation between bass playerCarlos Buschini (Tango Negro Trio, Cordoba Reunion) and percussionist Yahiro Tomohiro. These four musicians are taking the art of improvisation to a whole new level, away from predictable formulas. As a matter of fact, they are shaping a new style of music. Nevertheless, its natural elegance makes it still sound surprinsingly familiar to us.

Italian busy star trumpeteer Paolo Fresu was so enthusiastic about the project that he spontaneously decided to join the band for a CD recording and common live concerts.

Imagination Quartet available for performances

Imagination Quartet is an expressive music project launched in 2009. Though it clearly relies on classic jazz esthetics, it does not let itself be trapped in music standards and common expectations.

On the 21st of November 2011, Imagination Quartet released their debut album under the label of Anaconda Productions. The album, available on the Polish mar�ket and in online distribution, summarizes the hitherto activity of the band. It includes 11 original compositions, explicitly basing on jazz esthetics, while re�taining its special, unique character.

Trio Libero
UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard�s second ECM album introduces his freely lyrical new trio with Michel Benita and Sebastian Rochford. All three players share a sense of stylistic open-mindedness. Drummer Rochford is one of the young players changing perceptions of British jazz with bands Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland. Algiers-born French bassist Benita, who cites Charlie Haden and Scott LaFaro as influences, has played with Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz and in the ELB trio with Nguy�n L� and Peter Erskine.
Repertoire here includes originals by Sheppard, Benita and Rochford, plus group improvisations and the standard �I�m Always Chasing Rainbows.� In all contexts, interaction is highly creative, as Benita and Rochford respond perceptively to Sheppard�s melodically and rhythmically inventive lines. Recorded July 2011 at Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano.

Matthew Shipp and Sabir Mateen - SAMA (Not Two, 2010)
Pianist Matthew Shipp and multi-instrumentalist Sabir Mateen make for fascinating duet partners on this album, which is an eight part suite of completely improvised music recorded at the Roulette Studio in New York City. While Mateen plays a battery of instruments from saxohpone to flute, it appears that he sticks to clarinet throughout this recording. The high woody sound of the clarinet makes from a fascinating contrast with Shipp\'s often low and probing keyboard playing. Shipp\'s piano playing is clearly articulated and patient whether his is laying down a foundation for Mateen to improvise over, or engaging him in a head-to-head duet. Shipp lays down beautifully stark and dark toned chords and notes, and Mateen swirls and probes them in a natural and organic way. The suite builds logically through a series of dynamic moods and textures, from fast paced free improvisation to long and low abstractions of melody and form. Ecstasy, humour and first rate virtuosity: Accordion wizard Renato Borghetti is the superstar among the new folk musicians from Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil. The charismatic gaúcho has revised, adapted and modernized many of the native sounds of his home country. His shows are unforgettable live events, offering a sparkling and elegant mix of traditional forms such as Milonga, Chacarera and Chamamé with elements of Jazz, Tango and chamber music. And in spite of all experiments he remains 100% gaúcho – with hat, long hair and wide trousers.

“Borghettinho”, as his fans like to call him, has been recording cds for more than 20 years. He has shared the stage with Stephane Grapelli, Ron Carter and Hermeto Pascoal and is the first Brazilian musician to achieve a golden record with purely instrumental music. Gauchos, his first European CD, was immediately nominated for the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik” in 2005 and presented with a lot of success in numerous concerts and festivals all over Europe. Gaitaponto.Com and Fandango! were both nominated for a Grammy Latino.

Renato\'s latest album Andanças (Saphrane/Music&Words) is the live recording of a concert in Brussels in May 2009 and represents something like the resume of 10 years touring in Europe – a time of investigating the musicians’ own roots, discovering new ways of musical expression and making a lot of new friends. The CD was selected among the best CDs of the year 2011 by the Dutch newspaper Het Parool and the Italian jazz portal All About Jazz Italia. And the brandnew DVD Renato Borghetti Quartet Europa has just been released on time for the upcoming tour: a charming roadmovie by René Goya Filho on the summer tour 2010.

They\'ll be joined by Ska\'d For Life another 10 piece behemoth of a band playing ska arrangements of classic songs. Always a pleasure to watch and always getting the party started. A great night guaranteed for party goers and music lovers alike.

Review Spinifex Quintet meets Gevende

Spinifex Quintet has launched an exciting new collaboration with Gevende, the well-known psychedelic folk band from Istanbul. The premiere took place on 28 november at Pera Fest, at club Haymatlos in Istanbul. Watch the video and see how the two bands combine into one single boiling collective. In december 2012, this project will tour in the Netherlands. The project Spinifex Quintet meets Gevende is produced by Stichting Kulsan.
