Piirpauke with their new CD - Koli

Piirpauke returns to Finnish national romanticism with flair

Piirpauke, the pioneer of Finnish world music since their establishing in 1974, has renewed its line-up and released a new album, Koli(Rockadillo). In a way, the new album is a return to the group\'s roots as a jazz band playing Finnish folk songs. The central figure of the band,Sakari Kukko (saxes, flutes, piano) and a long-time Piirpauke member Ismaila Sane(percussion) have here been joined by top-class jazz musicians Eerik Siikasaari (double bass) and Rami Eskelinen (drums), as well as rock guitarist Jukka Orma.

The music on the album comes partly from the roots of the Finnish pelimanni music, partly from the classical compositions from the time of the Finnish national romanticism – all performed with a strong multicultural soundscape in a true Piirpauke style. Four of the album\'s tracks are original compositions by Jean Sibelius (1865 - 1957), including the highly popular concert pieceValse Triste. The arrangements are made with sense of style, closely following and respecting the original works but also making them full-bodied Piirpauke pieces in their own right.

Proceeds Support Monterey Jazz Festival Education Programs

The Monterey Jazz Festival is pleased to announce that it will honor the legendary impresario, pianist and philanthropist, George Wein, at its 2010 Jazz Legends Gala on Thursday, September 16, at Mission Ranch in Carmel, California. Mr. Wein is the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival and 2005 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts “Jazz Master” Award.

Hosted by Clint and Dina Eastwood, the Gala will feature the presentation of the Jazz Legends Award to Mr. Wein and will also include a evening of cocktails, a sumptuous gourmet dinner and a special duo performance by the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2010 Artist-In-Residence, four-time Grammy®-winning vocalist, Dianne Reeves with pianist Peter Martin.

“With George appearing at this year’s MJF it is a perfect opportunity to honor him with our Jazz Legends Award,” said Tim Jackson, General Manager of the Monterey Jazz Festival. “He is truly ‘The Godfather’ of jazz festivals.”

The Gala is $225 per person, with net proceeds supporting the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Education Programs, considered to be some of the most highly regarded in the country.

The Jazz Legends Award was first presented to pianist Dave Brubeck in 2007, and to the composer, trumpeter and bandleader, Gerald Wilson, in 2008.

MJF’s Education Programs have a strong impact on students and schools from coast to coast. Programs include the Traveling Clinician and Latin Jazz Programs, with professional musicians visiting Monterey County schools to teach students how to play and improvise in jazz and Latin styles; the Artist-In-Residence Program, which brings a leading jazz performer to work with students throughout the year; the MJF Summer Jazz Camp, the MJF Instrument and Sheet Music Library, the Digital Music Education Program, the Next Generation Jazz Festival, the Monterey County High School All-Star Band, the MJF Middle School Honor Band and MJF Vocal Jazz Ensemble; and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. ABOUT GEORGE WEIN
Jazz impresario George Wein is considered to be as much a legend as his festivals. Through his company, Festival Productions, he has spearheaded hundreds of music events annually since 1954 when he produced the first Newport Jazz Festival – an event that started the "festival era," according to jazz critic Leonard Feather. At 84, Wein has as much creative fuel as he did when he started that festival and advanced the concept of live music. He pioneered the concept of sponsor association with music events.

As a result of his diverse contributions to jazz and world culture, Wein has been honored by heads of state, educational institutions and leading publications. In January, 2005, he was recognized with a Jazz Masters award as Jazz Advocate by the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition, honors and awards have been bestowed upon him by AARP, Studio Museum of Harlem, Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, the Government of France, New York Urban League, National Music Council, Pratt Institute, DownBeat magazine, the Jewish Advocate, Saint Peter\'s Jazz Ministry, WBGO/Jazz 88, Symphony Space and other organizations around the world. He is a member of the Collegium of Distinguished Alumni of Boston University and is the recipient of the Centennial Medallion Citation from the Hampton Institute as well as honorary degrees from the Berklee College of Music, Rhode Island College of Music, Five Towns College and North Carolina Central. Mr. Wein is a lifetime Honorary Trustee of Carnegie Hall and a member of the Board of Trustees at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Mr. Wein was decorated with France\'s Legion d´ Honneur for his creation of the contemporary jazz festival. He was also honored by the French government when he was appointed Commandeur de L´Ordre des Arts et Lettres.

In addition to his work as a producer, George Wein is an accomplished pianist whose group, the Newport All-Stars, has toured the United States, Europe and Japan. His band has featured some of the greatest musicians in the history of jazz music. Mr. Wein’s autobiography, Myself Among Others: A Life in Music (Da Capo Press), which chronicles his life in jazz, was recognized by the Jazz Journalists Association as 2004’s best book about jazz. JJA also named him 2009\'s Events Producer of the Year. In addition to his life in jazz, Mr. Wein has a long history of involvement with philanthropy and the arts, including the establishment of the Joyce and George Wein Chair of African American Studies at Boston University and the Alexander Family Endowed Scholarship Fund at Simmons College. Mr. Wein will be in conversation and will perform on the Grounds at the 2010 Monterey Jazz Festival on Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19.

ABOUT DIANNE REEVES
A Blue Note recording artist since 1987, Dianne Reeves is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world today. As a result of her virtuosity, improvisational prowess and unique jazz and R&B stylings, Reeves was awarded the Grammy for “Best Jazz Vocal Performance” for three consecutive recordings -- In The Moment: Live in Concert(2000); The Calling (2001) and A Little Moonlight (2003) -- a Grammy first in any vocal category. She has recorded eighteen albums as a leader, and has appeared on dozens of others with such artists ranging from Stanley Turrentine, Steps Ahead, Lou Rawls, McCoy Tyner, George Duke, T.S. Monk, Lenny White, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard, and many more. Reeves has additionally recorded and performed extensively with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; recorded with Chicago Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Daniel Barenboim); and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2002, Reeves performed at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, and also made an appearance and performance on the season finale of HBO\'s Sex and the City. In 2003, Reeves was appointed to be first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and became the first singer to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall.

In 2005, Reeves appeared and performed in George Clooney’s film, Good Night, and Good Luck. The soundtrack recording of Good Night, and Good Luck provided Reeves her fourth Best Jazz Vocal Grammy in 2006. After several years of extensive touring, Dianne took a break back in Denver, and in 2008, she released her first Blue Note album of new material in five years, When You Know. MJF/53 in 2010 will be her ninth performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival.

ABOUT PETER MARTIN
Raised by parents who are both classical musicians, Peter began studying violin and piano at age three. After graduating from high school, Peter received the Presidential Scholar in the Arts award from President Reagan. He then attended The Juilliard School in New York on scholarship, studying with Martin Canin, until moving to New Orleans in 1990. While in New Orleans, Martin honed his skills working with key musicians such as Nicholas Payton, Germaine Bazzle, Chris Thomas, Alvin Batiste, Brian Blade and Victor Goines. He also embarked on an active solo career and toured and recorded with artists such as Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Chris Botti, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Roy Hargrove, and Joshua Redman. Peter performed on and arranged Dianne Reeves’ Grammy-winning release A Little Moonlight and co-produced her 2004 Blue Note CDChristmas Time Is Here. Peter also appeared in George Clooney’s 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck and was featured on the Grammy-winning soundtrack. Martin’s latest release, In the P.M., is available on MAXJAZZ Records. Peter Martin is a Steinway Piano Artist.

Under the High patronage of His Highness Prince Albert II, Monaco City Hall & Monte Carlo Jazz Festival ( SBM ) are organising the 12th International Jazz Soloist Competition for all catégories of instruments.

Musicians wishing to take part must send an audio recording to :

The recording must show the participant performing 2 jazz standards with a rhytmic section.

A specialised jury will select the three best competitors for the final evening which take place in november 2010 during the Monte Carlo Jazz Festival.

The selected participants will perform three jazz standards their own choice from a list which be mailed to them with the letter announcing their sélection.

A rhytmic section ( piano, bass guitar and drums ) will accompany the candidates during the performance.

The organisers will cover the finalists accommodations costs for two night breakfast incuded.

The list of prize winner will be announced, after délibération of the jury, at the end of the performance, prize will be paid in cash.

The jury’s decision will be final.

The prizes are as follow :

The winner will be invited for a concert during the Monte Carlo Jazz Festival 2011

Free Fall

Free Fall is touring Europe in November 2010, the booking period goes from november 20th until the 28th. Would you like to present them in your programme?

The trio Free Fall was organized by bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, reedist Ken Vandermark, and pianist Håvard Wiik in 2001 as an opportunity to work together in a chamber music environment without percussion. Inspired in part by Jimmy Giuffre\'s classic group with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow, the group quickly found its own way of working with velocity, space, sound and time, after its first met. The trio has always only performed their original compositions, and released its first album of this material, called “Furnace,” to great acclaim in 2002.

After playing in Europe and the United States, Free Fall went back into the studio during November, 2004, to record its second album, “Amsterdam Funk”, this time for the Norwegian label Smalltownsuperjazz, with whom they have continued to collaborate. The second recording included freely improvised performance for the fisrt time – a parallel and equally powerful way of performing by the trio. Continued work in Europe and North America led to developements of “The Point In A Line” (2007), recorded in Chicago during the summer of 2006. This album included both new compositions and total improvisation.

Their activity as a group escalated in 2008, with a featured performance at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and an extensive tour of Europe that brought them to Moscow for the first time. Their brand new album, "Grey Scale", to be released next April also on Smalltownsuperjazz, is completly improvised. That\'s a new step forward for the band. It was recorded in Osnabruck, Germany in early September of 2008. But the trio has started working on new compositionally based material for a recording that they will do in the period of their tour in November 2010.

- She was born in Tirana, Albania. Starts singing at 5 and performs at many children’s festivals. She moves to Sweden in 1992, and settles in Geneva. Studies classic piano at the Music Conservatory in Geneva. She acts in a few movies between 2000 and 2004, for which she also composes the music. Meanwhile she starts to record and tour with different jazz bands. She receives the special jury prize for the Lakuriq album in Tirana, 2005. She studies vocal jazz and composition between 2004 and 2008, when she also starts her own band: Elina Duni Quartet.
- She also prepared a very important surprise for Garana, her interpretation of Maria Tanase’s “Lume, lume”!

- Wondering why Terje Rypdal plays at Gărâna for the second time? Because we’re worth it, I would say, quoting from a commercial! The trio: Terje Rypdal, Miroslav Vitous and Gerald Cleaver have in mind for this concert a sound visualisation of a new dimension in jazz-rock: abstract, melodious and funky – all at once. This is an older idea, thought of in the ’80s: a mixture of jazz with jazz-rock, maximizing the concert equipment effects. The dream comes to life on the 22nd of July, at Gărâna.

- The group is in the quartet formula in 2009. The two saxophonists will join after a while and, soon after, the band will consist of 8 members. They will present a new project at Garana, with jazz, funk, acid jazz, hip-hop and soul influences, tightly woven with the unmistakable sounds of one Dj Ritmul (Rithm), full of power but often interrupted by blissful bits, which carry you to a fairy land, subtly enveloped by the nostalgic sound of famous tunes, scratched off from vintage vinyl’s.

- He was born in Mumbai, India. He learned how to play from his father, Alla Rakha, famous member of Ravi Shankar led ensemble. He replaces his father at just 18 years of age and leaves on tour in America, holding more than 150 concerts a year. He settles there, starting to study ethnological music at Washington University.
- He works with the pioneers of fusion: John Handy and Mickey Hart. He starts the group Shakti with John McLaughlin. Founds Moment Records in 1992, the famous record label for fusion and classical Indian music. The constant collaboration with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer starts in 2006 and is accompanied by many successes.
- Bela Fleck banjo
- Born in New York, he has an early connection with the jazz bands of the time, spelled by Flatt & Scruggs music, and holds a banjo at 14. Not long after he starts experimenting with bebop, and in the 1980s, records his first solo album: Crossing the Trucks. Starts the super group The Flecktones in 1989, composed of talented young men eager to experiment. Success follows in as the blu-bop and bluegrass combination excites and incites the public. Most of his albums are awarded, Bela Fleck being the most nominated (27 times) and also the most titled jazzman (11 times) of the Grammy awards. He sang and recorded with many artists like Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, Jeff Coffin, Sting, Branford Marsalis and with a few exceptional african singers, falling in love with african music during a documentary experience which gathered a lot of fans.
- Edgar Meyer contrabass
- Learned how to play from his father. Studied with Stuard Sankey, being one of his favourite students, due to his proven virtuosity and excellent technique.
- He is awarded with the Avery Fisher Prize in 2000, a once in a few years award, for best instrumentalist. He developed his poli-instrumentalist skills during concerts and recordings, playing at the piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin and dobro. One of his qualities is his grasp for collaborations and projects, classical music or jazz related. He recorded and held concerts with: Chris Thile, Joshua Bell, Sam Bush, Mark O’Connor.

- Speaking of trios, Tomasz Stanko says: ” There was no band like this in the whole history of polish jazz!”
- The group’s biography starts in 1990, when Wasilewski and Kurkiewicz, both 15 years of age, students at the Koszalin Music Highschool, start playing jazz together. They start holding concerts as a trio the next year. Knowing the Polish Jazz School’s tradition, it’s not a surprise they get at the top of the favourite’s list. The bands drum player, Michal Miskiewicz, joins the group in 1993.
- The three develop they’re own style. The melody, dynamism and interpretative technique make them unmistakable. After just a few concerts the public wows them, and the festival invites start pouring in! The first album gets international recognition, released by the famous record label ECM, simply called – Trio.
BREDERODE QUARTET Holland
- Seriosity and talent placed Wolfred Brederode in the top most prolific and authentic Dutch jazz musicians.
- He plays in no less than eight formulae. Has an extremely full life: concerts, recordings, tours, and he’s currently involved in nine projects, some solo some with other mostly nordic artists. He recorded 19 albums, some of them awarded in Europe.
- Almost all plays to be presented at Garana are own compositions, full of harmony and feeling.
MUTHSPIEL TRIO Austria
- He was born in Judenburg, Austria. Started studying violin at the age of 6, moving towards the guitar in adolescence. After graduating from the Musical HighSchool, majoring in jazz and classic guitar, went on to the famous Barklee College of Music. He is quickly spotted and starts playing with Gary Burton, taking Pat Metheny’s place. He also played with: Maria Joao, Dave Liebman, Peter Eschine, Gary Peacock, John Patitucci.
- Moves back to Vienna in 2002. This is where he starts his own record label, Material Records, recording his own and other talented young musician’s discs.
- Besides concerts with his own band – The Wolfgang Muthspiel 4et, he is also involved in two other projects: Friendly Travelers – with Ralph Towner and MGT – with Slava Grigoryan.

- It’s the number one in Hungarian jazz-fussion. They’ve played together for 15 years, winning many international awards, being a constant presence in Europe, Asia and North America’s jazz festivals. Starting with 2007, they play regularly with Steve Hacket, the former guitar player from Genesis. They’re music is unique, combining jazz elements with Hungarian folklore motifs and world music. They are for the second time at Garana, and will present plays from the new album, as well as older ones.

- Apparently a saxophone and accordeon duet is an awkward combination. Not in this case! Not mentioning that both instruments create sounds based on air, the duo are a perfect match!
- They have a history of playing together (many projects led by Seim), but Yeraz is their first album as a duo. The programme will be based on Trygve Seim’s compositions, most of which are from their album. We’re expecting a great revelation for the Gărâna spectators. Seim exploreas new sounds, but, in spite of the new norwegian players wave, it stays as a tribute to the acoustic saxophone, similar to Jan Garbarek.
- The concert could be characterized as abstract, concretely textured, well defined, endowed with moments of deep despair and profound optimism.

Her music has a broad range and is based on traditional blues-jazz. All her 13 recorded albums received very good critique, each of them bringing new elements to her music.

- Shortly after Esbjorn Svensson’s death, Dan Berglund was looking for a new configuration to express himself with. He remembered his colleague from Per Texas Johansson, the guitar player Johan Lindstrom, whom he played with before e.s.t. and started rehersing. Martin Hederos and Andreas Werliin joined them after no more than 6 months, and so, four different personalities formed an already homogenous group, with their own style and repertoire.
- The name Tonbruken is also the name of their first album, released at ACT. This album gives the members the opportunity to perform as solo artists but also as a band. Open to all influences be them from jazz music or rock.

Il magistrale pianismo di Riccardo Zegna e l’affascinante voce di Joanna Rimmer si fondono in una proposta nella quale a prevalere è l’eleganza dell’esecuzione e la facilità nel comunicare. Libero di pensare e dare contenuto alla propria essenza artistica senza l’assillo del “dover fare” Riccardo Zegna esprime non comuni capacità interpretative, in una cornice stilisticamente definita, ma nel contempo permeabile alla propria verve creativa. Nel contesto, la presenza magnetica di Joanna Rimmer, la facilità con la quale sa cantare con grinta quasi violenta un blues o con tenera dolcezza una ballad conferiscono alla proposta un appagante senso di compiutezza.

Dopo lo straordinario successo dell’omaggio a Tina Modotti, Bearzatti presenta il suo nuovo progetto dedicato a un’altra figura dallo spiccato impegno civile, forse non abbastanza conosciuta, ma che ha lasciato tracce indelebili nel secolo scorso. Come si trattasse di una sequenza di capitoli che raccontano la vita di Malcom X, dall’infanzia alla maturità, all’impegno contro la segregazione razziale fino al suo assassinio, la musica prende la forma di una lunga suite che si dipana tra momenti di straordinaria intensità ed energia, ed altri in cui prevale un forte pathos emotivo, in una libertà espressiva di grande fascino e impatto.

Esposizione da domenica 4 luglio a domenica 1 agosto tutti i giorni dalle 17.30 alle 19.30. Nei giorni di concerto a Clusone dalle 16.30 alle 21.00.

Gli amici di Clusone Jazz avrebbero voluto accompagnare la mostra con una presentazione, ma penso che le parole non possano aggiungere molto a quello che un\'immagine sa, o non sa, comunicare. Anzi, considero importante che ognuno possa guardare e interpretare il mio lavoro in modo personale e libero. Un\'opera esiste veramente solo nel momento in cui riesce a creare un contatto con l\'immaginario di chi guarda, ascolta o legge.

Siamo felici di riproporre Bill Frisell, che si esibì per la prima volta a Clusone nel 1987 in un memorabile concerto in questo stesso teatro. Già allora riconosciuto come un grandissimo talento per l’originalità del suono e la capacità di mescolare blues, country, distorsioni rock e jazz, è ora considerato unanimamente il chitarrista più rappresentativo di questi decenni. I progetti a suo nome, in varie direzioni e formazioni, le collaborazioni, da John Zorn, a Paul Motian, Elvis Costello, Elvin Jones, gli album, prima con l’ECM poi con la Nonesuch, sono stati innumerevoli, ma sempre caratterizzati da altissima qualità, lirismo, voglia di scoprire e sperimentare nuovi mondi musicali e nuove sonorità, mantenendo quel timbro e quella sensibilità che lo rendono diverso da tutti, subito riconoscibile e indiscusso maestro per chiunque ami la chitarra, la ricerca musicale e l’improvvisazione.

Stefano Pastor è bravo ed il suo lavoro sugli archi è unico. Il suono inconfondibile del suo violino è frutto di una lunga ricerca volta a mettere a punto un linguaggio originale ma autenticamente “afro-americano”, ispirato da alcuni grandi sassofonisti del passato. Grazie ad una tecnica particolare che non conosce eguali, il violino di Stefano Pastor appare quello di uno strumento a fiato, posto a servizio di un’intrigante avventura sonora, innovativa ed affascinante come poche.

Non nuovi ad intese e collaborazioni con gli organici e i contesti più disparati, Francesco Pinetti, Carlo Nicita e Yuri Goloubev hanno allestito questa nuova formazione per il concerto che terranno nella Chiesa di San Giuliano ad Albino, nell’ambito della 30^ edizione del Clusone Jazz Festival. A caratterizzare Purple B’Rain sono le straordinarie doti musicali dei tre protagonisti, messe al servizio di un progetto acustico che vuole essere coinvolgente ed intenso nei momenti di maggiore tensione, scevro da vincoli sul piano dei riferimenti e dell’esposizione, convincente nella ricerca di una espressione misurata, mai banale.

MARI KVIEN BRUNVOLL SOLO

Mari Kvien Brunvoll - voce e elettronica

Sebbene non abbia ancora finito gli studi al conservatorio, la cantante Mari Kvien Brunvoll, nata a Molde, ha già creato grande scalpore sulla scena norvegese per la sua autenticità e la voce penetrante e di immediato impatto, in linea con lo spirito di artiste come Sidsel Endressen. La giovane cantante sta seguendo un percorso singolare che abbraccia anche progetti per bambini e teatro. La sua musica è un’espressione personale a cavallo tra jazz, electro pop e acoustic blues. Sul palco non è completamente sola, fa uso di loop e pedali, cetre e thumb piano che aggiungono dettagli al suo mondo sonoro intimo e pieno di sentimento.

DOPPELMOPPEL è un connubio di interscambi e istantaneità espressiva. DOPPELMOPPEL è un gruppo capace di andare oltre le mode, in grado di sviluppare una capacità espressiva per certi versi unica.

Mettersi in gioco, cercare e creare suggestioni, aprirsi al confronto, liberare la creatività: sono questi i presupposti che accompagnano un sodalizio inedito, all’ascolto del quale è necessario avvicinarsi con altrettanta propensione all’imprevedibile evoluzione del concerto. Connie Bauer è un pioniere della musica innovativa e uno dei massimi specialisti del trombone. Il fratello Johannes e Nils Wogram hanno saputo seguirne l’impronta cogliendo nel virtuosismo, mai fine a se stesso, il significato che l’improvvisazione assume nella musica contemporanea: una sorta di anarchia che, associata al rigore tecnico, produce un’intrigante miscela di suoni multifonici.

BOJAN Z & JULIEN LOURAU DUO

Bojan Zulfikarpasic è da alcuni anni tra i musicisti più creativi della nuova generazione presenti sulla scena europea (Clusone lo ospitò nel 1994 nel quartetto di Henry Texier). Personalità artisticamente spiccata, la sua musica unisce la migliore tradizione jazzistica europea alla musica colta e alla musica balcanica. Julien Lourau, considerato dalla stampa specializzata uno tra i più interessanti sassofonisti europei, basa sull’originalità compositiva ed espositiva la propria forza. Le sue proposte sono sempre molto trasversali, condite di riferimenti, i più disparati, a volte anche dissacranti. Insieme, danno vita ad una proposta musicale innovativa, intensa, ricca di riferimenti ad altre musiche,

convincente, assolutamente godibile

I due chitarristi hanno vissuto per molti anni non lontano l\'uno dall\'altro, nella Germania dell’ Est, suonando insieme nel quartetto \"Doppelmoppel”. Mentre i chitarristi elettrici di oggi sembrano clonati più che “formati”, il gioco individuale e di interazione dei due musicisti, la loro consonanza e la divisione del lavoro, i loro delicati e sorprendenti suoni, sono del tutto originali. Entrambi hanno un accesso forte e percussivo alla musica, una gioia anarchica ad alta velocità delle dita e del tocco, suoni d\'archi e di ricerca nello spazio di frequenza dei loro strumenti. Suonano insieme senza interruzioni e in modo inimitabile.

Simon Nabatov è tra i pianisti più innovativi in Europa. Nils Wogram è assurto in pochi anni ad icona del suo strumento per la duttilità e la morbidezza con la quale suona il trombone in maniera strepitosa. Le loro collaborazioni sono frequenti ed avvengono anche in formazioni allargate; ma è in situazioni come queste che ad emergere sono l’intensità, la creativa vitalità del dialogo, la reciproca disponibilità ad alternarsi ed a sostenere l’assolo dell’altro. Una proposta ricca di stimolanti intrecci, in una dimensione ovunque molto apprezzata.

La popolarità, il talento, la personalità, sono peculiarità sufficienti per inquadrare il valore dei musicisti che formano questo gruppo, che in altri tempi sarebbe stato “all stars”. A noi piace invece presentarlo semplicemente come un gruppo di amici che a partire dagli anni ‘80 ha saputo connotare la scena jazz europea, indicando un modo originale di fare musica, improvvisando al di fuori degli stilemi del jazz americano. Quattro straordinari innovatori che oggi, dopo una aver attraversato in lungo ed in largo la scena musicale contemporanea, accantonate alcune ambiziose velleità giovanili, scoprono una dimensione più divertita del fare musica, con straordinari savoir faire, stile e leggerezza.

GIOVANNI FALZONE ELECTRIC QUARTET “around Jimi Hendrix”

Il progetto Around Jimi, oltre ad essere un tributo a uno dei musicisti più importanti della musica rock in occasione del quarantesimo anniversario dalla sua morte, nasce dalla volontà di creare un incontro immaginario tra Miles Davis e Jimi Hendrix, che non avvenne mai per la prematura scomparsa di quest’ultimo. Il repertorio è caratterizzato dall’alternanza di brani composti da Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis e Giovanni Falzone. Gli arrangiamenti, tutti di Falzone, hanno l’obbiettivo di creare un suono omogeneo e di ripercorrere, attraversando stili e generi musicali differenti - jazz, rock, classico-contemporanea - momenti esecutivi con strutture ben definite per tutti gli strumenti e momenti di puro interplay. Fanno parte di questo progetto musicisti capaci e attenti con i quali il leader ha instaurato un rapporto di complicità ed intesa musicale, grazie soprattutto alla loro sensibilità e capacità di recepire ogni piccolo segnale.

Raaga Trio plays a subtle blend of jazz and traditional West-African music and was created in 2007 following a meeting of three musicians all from different backgrounds.

The word "Raaga" meaning "market" comes from the local Morée dialect from Burkina Faso which fittingly describes the way these musicians create their music - like exchanges in a West African market! Drawing on their own style and searching for new ways of creating compositions in a completely organic way, Raaga Trio soon developed a synergy in their compositions - they never talk about what they are going to play - they just play.

The music pulls you into deep currents of Manding feeling, experimental and jazzy sounds which sweep you away. The magnificent ngoni and bass ngoni of Andra Kouyaté (Mali) who is pushing boundaries by deliberately trying to lose himself in music in search of new ways to play differently; the excellent rhythms of percussionist Baba Konaté (Burkina Faso) with a rhythmic vocabulary taken from all his musical experiences of working with bands around the world; the harmonious, electric tones of Andreas Fulgosi\'s (Italy) superb guitar work come together in naturally created melodies through harmonies influenced by western classical and modern music and resulting in an original sound balance between traditional music and rock, deeply enriched by the West African music culture.

In 2009 Raaga Trio became a quartet when they were joined by a fourth member following a jam session. The powerful dubs of Guillaume Lagger (Switzerland) on harmonica bind everything together through the original sounds created by electronic guitar effects, giving more power and adding an extra dimension to the music.

Following a number of successful concerts in Europe and most recently in Algeria and a West African tour this spring, Raaga Trio are ready to release their first album \'The Other Edge\'. It has been recorded by Renaud Millet-Lacombe at Hush Sound Studio in Switzerland and is set to be released during the summer of 2010.

This music is an invitation to embark on a journey through sound, and a chance to experience its positivism, its humanity and its generosity.

Cedar Walton is one of the most universally respected jazz pianists active today, having played and recorded with many of the seminal artists in jazz history including: Abbey Lincoln, Lou Donaldson, Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson, Art Farmer, George Coleman, John Coltrane, and Joe Henderson. In addition he served as musical director with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers from 1961 to 1964. This group featuring Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Curtis Fuller is regarded as the best band in the long history of the Jazz Messengers.

"The first real jazz star of the decade" (Frankfurter Allg. Zeitung), Carlos Bica is both a remarkable composer and outstanding bass player. He has the rare ability to write melodies that essentially are songs without words, haunting and unforgettable. Inspired by many different sources -- classical music, jazz, rock, pop, fado, world music, folk --, Bica\'s music always possesses a special atmosphere of poetry and magic. He started his trio Azul in the nineties incorporating obstinate guitar genius Frank Möbus (leader of Der Rote Bereich) and fascinating drum wizard Jim Black (of Dave Douglas fame) into a unique ensemble concept. The three of them go for a fresh mixture of jazz beats, rock twists and Mediterranean melodicism and a soundscape repeatedly compared to Radiohead and Tortoise. "The musicians dare to leave open spaces -- one of the most obvious strengths of the trio," says Jazzthetik magazine. "Southern lightness, highly energetic density, humorous playfulness, dramatic heaviness -- all that comes together for a stimulating palette of blue shades."
"Believer" is Azul\'s fourth album celebrating this Portuguese-German-American band\'s 10th anniversary. Says bandleader Bica: "The focus is on the songs, not on the musicians, yet at the same time there is a lot of space for the musicians\' own expressions - which is what makes this music different from pop music." As visionary and sophisticated as its predecessors, the new album in addition features the turntablism of DJ Illvibe (aka Vincent von Schlippenbach) who is best known as a member of Berlin\'s dancehall projects Seeed and Lychee Lassi. His participation partly sounds as if \'produced\' but was actually created in a totally spontaneous studio session. Pushed by DJ Illvibe\'s scratch sounds Azul\'s multi-urban grooves open a bright window into the future.
