Goshen, NY. The 3rd Annual Goshen Jazz Festival, hosted by the Rotary Club of Goshen, will feature NYC-based Jazz Vocalist Michelle Walker, Blues Man Bill Perry and The Hot Latin Sounds of Sonando on the Main Stage at the Goshen Historic Track on Saturday, September 16, 7:30 PM. Bass Artisan Christopher Dean Sullivan will serve as Emcee. Admission is a donation of any amount that will fund a music scholarship in Smith's memory. Last year's scholarship recipient is percussionist Maria Alejandra Perez Lawrence from Cornwall Central High School, New Windsor, NY.
The Goshen Rotary Club Willie The Lion Smith Jazz Festival was founded by The Rotary Club of Goshen and inspired by jazz great Willie The Lion Smith, who was born and raised in Goshen. The charitable festival will celebrate the life and legacy of the legend who ignited the jazz world in the 1920s with his piano style known as The Harlem Stride.
Orange County Executive Edward Diana issued a proclamation declaring September 18th Willie The Lion Smith Day in Orange County, the date of the first annual Goshen Jazz Festival. The festival is endorsed by Goshen officials, as well as the Goshen Chamber of Commerce and local merchants. West Main Street will be closed for a street festival featuring artists during the afternoon portion of the festival. There will be free jazz performances during the daytime portion of the event in selected Goshen venues (see schedule below for artists and venues), as well as performances on The Goshen Greens. From the afternoon into the evening, from local venues to the main stage, jazz will ring out from every corner of Goshen! Less than 60 miles from New York City, at the crossroads of two major highways - Routes 17 and 84, the city of Goshen is continuing to answer the call to bring world class jazz entertainment to the Hudson Valley.
About the Artists: Bill Perry Blues Man Bill Perry began playing guitar at age six. By high school, he led bands as vocalist and lead guitarist before graduation. After graduating, he lived in California and Colorado, all the while honing his distinctive guitar playing. He moved back to upstate New York and began touring with Richie Havens as well as The Band's Garth Hudson and Levon Helm. All that traveling spurred him on to form his own band in the early '90s. He released his first album Love Scars (Pointblank), followed by 1999's live album, High Octane, recorded at New York nightclub Manny's Car Wash, Fire It Up (Blind Pig, 2001), Crazy Kind of Life (Blind Pig, 2002) and Raw Deal (produced by Popa Chubby) in 2004. www.BillPerry.com
Perry not only has a handle on an arsenal of blues guitar styles but also seems equally at home with the over-the-top styles of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray. He writes great tunes and he and his band put on one helluva show. ~ Bonterra LowCountry Blues Bash
Sonando The hot Latin sounds of Sonando have earned them the reputation as the Hudson Valley's premier Latin band. This spicy blend of music and musicians have performed in clubs, at private functions, community festivals, benefit concerts, on radio and television, as well as the Puerto Rico Day Parade in NYC, but the band is at home wherever a dance floor can be cleared. Fueled by a fiery rhythm section and high-octane horns, Sonando plays a wide variety of Latin styles from Plena and Son to Salsa and Merengue! The hot Latin sounds of Sonando have earned them the reputation as the Hudson Valley's premier Latin band. www.Sonando.net
Michelle Walker Walker has a soul-comforting allure, states Mike Joyce of The Washington Post, Extraordinary Musicality, says Dave Nathan of All About Jazz, and legendary Jazz Vocalist Mark Murphy says She sings the soul of the song. Acclaimed jazz vocalist and recent New York City transplant from the Washington, DC area, Michelle Walker is one of the finest rising jazz voices to emerge in years. Often compared to Cassandra Wilson and Nina Simone, Walker's voice moves easily from a dark, deep tone to an effortless, swinging, midrange lilt. www.michellewalker.net
