MARTA TOPFEROVA
Marta Topferova-vocals, cuatro, Jenny Scheinman-violin, Pedro Giraudo-bass
When you listen to her with your eyes closed you imagine to be hearing a dyed-in-the-wool Latin American vocalist but she is only 29 years old and comes from the Czech Republic. She draws from various sources when it comes to folk music in the Spanish language like merengue, son and flamenco. ‘Don’t let the name fool you, the husky-voiced Topferova is a top-flight singer who offers a mellow and sensual take on the South American folk music tradition.’ (Village Voice).

Friday 2 june, 9pm, euro 16
DEBORAH BROWN & MIKE DEL FERRO TRIO
Deborah Brown-vocals, Mike Del Ferro-piano, Paul Berner-bass, Sebastiaan Kaptein-drums
Deborah Brown's brilliant voice qualities and warm, soulful voice reminds you of Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan. She has a strong sense of improvisation and is blessed with a furious scat like Ella Fitzgerald. Together with the trio of Mike del Ferro, a virtuoso soloist and alert accompanist, Brown will bring a repertoire of standards.

HOLLAND FESTIVAL
GARTH KNOX - VIOLA BRILLANTE
Garth Knox-viola, electronics
In this solo concert, viola player Garth Knox will perform works of various contemporary composers, among which Kaija Saariaho. This Finnish composer was very successful with her opera L’Amour de Loin that she presented at the Holland Festival in 2005. This piece is acknowledged as one of the most fascinating compositions in 30 years of contemporary music. The Holland Festival commissioned Kaija Saariaho to write a piece for viola player Garth Knox and presents the world premiere of this composition. www.hollandfestival.nl

HOLLAND FESTIVAL
USTAD FARIDA MAHWASH - RADIO KABOUL

Ustad Farida Mahwash-vocals, Ensemble Radio Kaboul
Mahwash is one of the most popular radio vocalists from Afghanistan. After spending time in Pakistan, for her safety, she obtained political asylum in the United States in 1991. Her title Ustad ('master') she already earned in 1977 which is very unusual for a woman. The Taliban, with its extremely destructive regime, threw most of her recordings on the stake. Mahwash is not politically involved: 'Art is about affection and kindness' she says. With her most recent album, Radio Kaboul, she pays a tribute to the composers she once collaborated with. The Holland Festival brings her to the Netherlands for the first time, an exceptional event. www.hollandfestival.nl

FUTCH

Thomas Lehn-analoge synthesizer, Jon Rose-violin, saw, electronics, Johannes Bauer-trombone
Futch, according to themselves; 'an unexpected constellation of musical minds and instruments', is a project form the British-Australian violinist and maker of bizarre violin variations, Jon Rose. ‘From one moment to the next, his violin might sound like a subway car screeching to a halt, the wailing of Jimi Hendrix's guitar, or a gently gurgling mechanical toy. From the cacophony arose memorable jazz riffs and Paganini style virtuosity’ (The New York Times).

Thursday 8 june, 9pm, euro 14
SEBASTIAAN CORNELISSEN QUARTET FEAT. GERARD PRESENCER, ROB VAN BAVEL, GARY WILLIS
Gerard Presencer-trumpet, Rob van Bavel-piano, Gary Willis-bass, Sebastiaan Cornelissen-drums
‘Modern electric jazz’ by a quartet in which power and interaction are at the forefront. Sebastiaan Cornelissen, one of the most prominent young drummers in this genre, is mainly known from Isotope, the group that he founded with Rob van Bavel. Cornelissen resides in the UK these days, where he teaches at the Royal Academy of Music. The American master on the bass guitar, Gary Willis, is well known from Tribal Tech and Gerard Presencer, one of England's top trumpeters, worked with Stan Tracey, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, to name a few.

JAZZ & THE SCREEN
ERIKA STUCKY & SINA - TOLUHEISCHIS VORLABU

Erika Stucky-vocals, accordion, Sina-vocals, Jon Sass-tuba
Erika Stucky is definitely one of the most original voices in the international jazz scene. 'A theatrical vocalist but performing in such a relaxed and casual way that she never goes over the top. Sometimes comical but just as touching. You could have heard a pin drop in the Bimhuis before the audience broke out in a standing ovation.(This is what the Volkskrant wrote about Stucky's Bimhuis debut in 2004). In Toluheischis Vorläbu she worked together with Swiss pop star Sina and American tuba player Jon Sass. There will also be Super 8 films projected, with characteristic comments from the vocalists. www.hollandfestival.nl

After many performances in and outside the Netherlands, Glerum Ex Machina is back in the Bimhuis where it had its premiere at the opening of the new building, an improvised declaration of love in music and image to the classic jazz rhythm section. In the most recent episode of Glerum Omnibus, the rhythm section is again a key topic: two Glerum generations, top guitarist Jesse van Ruller and soul mate Henry Wijnhard are searching for the clear line. Simplicity, color, groove and adventure determine the atmosphere in this multi media encounter. www.hollandfestival.nl

Saxofonist Michael Blake is, apart from his own formations, known from John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, The Jazz Composers Collective and the groups of Ben Allison. With Free Association he has a long history in playing his own repertoire. The band shifts from genre to genre, spontaneously conducted by Blake, ‘who likes to keep his music from growing static’. This tour puts him together with two of his oldest musical friends, drummer Ben Perowsky and multi instrumentalist Peck Allmond. The New Yorkers will be accompanied by Danish bass player Jonas Westergaard.

Sergei Starostin-vocals, Simon Nabatov-piano, Arkadiy Shilkloper-horn, Evelyn Petrova-accordion
The Russians are coming! is a program put together in consultation with pianist, composer, 'Muscovite' and cosmopolitan Simon Nabatov and the music programmers of the Moskow Cultural Centre DOM. A few of the most important Russian improvisors of the last three decades come together in a series of short performances, form solo to sextet, from a couple of minutes to a full set. Some parts of the program are prepared, others will be instantly composed on the concert night. The musicians share a deeply rooted interest in the Russian tradition of folk music which influences you can always detect in their own work. Whether it is about the Moscow Art Trio (with Shilkloper and Starostin), the repertoire of Simon Nabatov inspired by Russian literature or Evelyn Petrova's Year's Cycle, with which she did her Bimhuis debut and made a huge impression during the opening program of the new building. www.hollandfestival.nl

PIET NOORDIJK QUINTET PETE'S GROOVE
Piet Noordijk-alto sax, Jack van Poll-organ, Martijn van Iterson-guitar, Frans van Geest-bass, John Engels-drums
Dazzling playing, a recognizable tone, a sound that is sharp as a knife and intense ballads: these are the elements that characterize Piet Noordijk. In 1965 he received the Wessel Ilcken Prize and in 1987 the Bird Award. Like the title of his most recent album indicates; the emphasis is on a solid soulful groove this time.

Eric Vloeimans-trumpet, Ramon Valle-piano, Omar Rodriguez Calvo-bass, Liber Torriente-drums
At his debut in 1993, maestro Chucho Valdés called him ‘the greatest talent among our young pianists’ and Ramon Valle proved to have been worth those praising words. His virtuoso playing is always narrative, his Cuban background is quite audible but absorbed in a universal jazz concept. The lyrical power of his solid trio will be enhanced by the singing trumpet of Eric Vloeimans.

K-SWISS KONNECTED BIMHUIS II
URSULA RUCKER
TAMANGO'S URBAN TAP
THE DINING ROOMS
DJ EDO SALGADO
K-Swiss Konnected connects cultures, communities and people. Ursula Rucker navigates between spoken word, singing and poetry. On the debut album of the German Jazzanova, her voice was one of their great trump cards. But she is also very powerful on her solo albums. Her third CD Ma' At Mama is full of sharp lines about Bush, violence against women and discrimination. Urban Tap is the melting pot of the famous French Guianese dancer Tamango. The varying ensemble of dancers, acrobats and musicians had a worldwide success with a mix of street dance, hiphop, jazz and tap dance. For K-Swiss Konnected, Tamango brings percussionist Bonga and freestyle dancer Belina Becker to the stage. The relatively anonymous Italian lounge duo The Dining Rooms developed itself into a mature band. On their most recent album Experiments in Ambient Soul (Schema Records) Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti experiment with jazz rhythms, vocals and modern funk. On stage the duo will be assisted by bass player, drummer, vocalist Sean Martin and video artist Maria Arena. The young Amsterdam DJ talent Edo Salgado, known from the Teleskope and Spirit nights in the Amsterdam club scene (Sugarfactory and 11) connects the three performances with his soulful beats.

DJ JAIRZINHO
‘You can do anything you want with your marvelous voice, you have bossa, tuning, improvisation, rhythm, musicality, femininity, courage, total command of the ball.’ When Tom Jobim says this about you then you are one of the greatest in Brazilian music and it has been like that over 40 years when it comes to Joyce. ‘If she weren't the most complete of her generation of female vocalists, and inherently the most jazz savvy, she would still be one of Brazil's best songwriters.’ (Jazziz Magazine). ‘A free-spirited Brazilian artist. In the music of Joyce, melodic grace, rhythmic propulsion and buoyant humor are inseparable.’ (The New York Times).

CELLO SAMBAS JAQUES MORELENBAUM
Jaques Morelenbaum-cello, Lula Galvao-guitar, Carlos Balla-drums
afterwards, gratis
DJ EXES
Like a Brazilian Gil Evans, Morelenbaum has been taking care of the atmospheric orchestrations for a great variety of artists, from Cesaria Evora to Ryuichi Sakamoto and for fellow country men like Caetano Veloso and Egberto Gismonti whom he also accompanied as an instrumentalist. The classically trained cellist, who played for Leonard Bernstein, learned everything about the samba in Tom Jobim's group and, like a true Tropicalista, wasn't afraid of some progressive rock. Now he steps into the forefront with his own group. Meet a great musical thinker.
