Wednesday 3 may, 9pm, euro 8 CAFE CONCERT WILL HOLSHOUSER TRIO Ron Horton-trumpet, Will Holshouser-accordeon, Dave Phillips-bass "Accordionist Will Holshouser is the secret weapon in several of the scene's most inventive and engaging bands." (Time Out New York). In his own trio he combines swing, bob and freestyle improvisation with various traditional accordion styles like tango, zydeco and klezmer. "His compositions are intriguing, with wayward harmonies and soft-spoken melodies that make the accordion's thin, reedy treble range sound sweet. This could be music for some fantastical Fellini film." (The New York Times).
Thursday 4 may, 9pm, euro 14 MONICA SALMASO GROUP 'IAIA' Monica Salmaso-vocals, Teco Cardoso-sax, flute, Benjamim Taubkin-piano, Rodolfo Stroeter-bass, Ari Colares-percussion "Mônica Salmaso has a gorgeous, quintessentially Brazilian voice: quietly lustrous and sustained, suffusing each liquid note with languid secrets." (The New York Times). With Iaiá, her fourth album, she brings an impressive ode to Chico Buarque, Dorival Caymmi, Paulo César Pinheiro and Jobim. "To this, the lover of true music can surrender because Iaiá is an unpretentious masterpiece". (Het Parool). "Salmaso is bringing an airy, transformative quality to contemporary Brazilian music." (Los Angeles Times).
Friday 5 may, 9pm, euro 14 TIM BERNE BIG SATAN FEAT. MARC DUCRET, TOM RAINEY Tim Berne-alto sax, Marc Ducret-guitar, Tom Rainey-drums Not many musicians combine funk and intellect with an ease as alto saxophonist Tim Berne does. His compositions are, just like those of Steve Coleman and Anthony Braxton, restless and fickle. Big Satan, with which he released two CD’s on his own Screwgun label, is Berne’s trio with guitarist Marc Ducret who masters a range from jazz to progressive rock and heavy metal, and the clear and driving force Tom Rainey on drums.
Saturday 6 may, 9pm, euro 16 WALLACE RONEY QUINTET Wallace Roney-trumpet, Antoine Roney-sax, Robert Irving III-piano, Charnett Moffett-bass, Lenny White-drums, Val Jeantry-DJ, electronic It is undeniable that Wallace Roney is inspired by Miles Davis (Roney is the only trumpet player that had Davis as a mentor), but you can also trace the exuberance of Clifford Brown in his playing, that shows an impressive mastering of the instrument but also abroad stylistic interest. For instance, he used one of the most creative new DJ’s, Val Jeanty, for the last edition of his group. "Also his most recent album Mystikal connects with Miles Davis, but now it touches his 70’s music, the electric era." (NRC Handelsblad).
Sunday 7 may, 2.30pm, euro 14 IZALINE Presentation CD Kanta Helele Izaline Calister-vocals, Ed Verhoeff-guitar, Jose Lopretti-piano, Reno Steba-bass, Roel Calister-drums, percussion, Rendel Rosalia-percussion, Niata Augusta-backing vocals "Calister writes history in the Bimhuis", was a headline in the NRC Handelsblad about her debut concert, five years ago. By now she toured all over the world with her "dream team" of Antillean musicians and the group became more mature. Sometimes modest, sometimes expressive and exciting, Izaline blends the traditional music of her island Curaçao with jazz. With "Kanta Hélele" she still follows her own road.
Sunday 7 may, 9pm, euro 14 JAZZ ORCHESTRA OF THE CONCERTGEBOUW & THEO LOEVENDIE, KRISTINA FUCHS led by Henk Meutgeert The first time Theo Loevendie heard Kristina Fuch sing was in 2003, after which he immediately asked her for his ensemble Ziggurat. Other collaborations followed like a highly successful concert series with Fuchs’ Sonic Unit for which Loevendie wrote new compositions. The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw invited the duo to perform these compositions with the big band.

Wednesday 10 may, 9pm, euro 14 MARC RIBOT TRIO CERAMIC DOG Marc Ribot-guitar, Shahzad Ismaily-bass guitar, Ches Smith-drums The new power trio of Marc Ribot, with two of the best new players from the American underground (New York, California) is a real band, not a "project". The guitarist that added such striking new colors and lines to the music of John Zorn and Tom Waits and to that of his own Cubanos Postizos, founded, with Ceramic Dog, "his rawest band in ages", according to Time Out New York.
Thursday 11 may, 9pm, euro 14 METROPOLE ORCHESTRA BIG BAND PLAYS MENDOZA led by Vince Mendoza A year ago, Vince Mendoza succeeded Dick Bakker as chief conductor of the Metropole Orchestra. Dense coloring of sounds, latin and fusion influences characterize the work of the 44 year old American. The big band of the Metropole Orchestra is by now closely connected with his musical language and brings in this concert new and old work of Mendoza.
Friday 12 may, 9pm, euro 14 NOAH HOWARD QUARTET Noah Howard-alto sax, Michael Smith-piano, Harry Swift-bass, Calyer Duncan-drums Influenced by Albert Ayler, alto saxophonist Noah Howard made his debut with two releases (Noah Howard Quartet and At Judson Hall) on the innovating ESP label. From there he became one of the key figures representing free jazz in the 60’s and 70’s. With Bobby Few and Muhammad Ali he was a part of the legendary Frank Wright Quartet.
Saturday 13 may, 9pm, euro 12 UMO JAZZ ORCHESTRA SAUNA PALAA! - THE SAUNA IS ON FIRE! Jan Kohlin, Timo Paasonen, Mikko Pettinen, Tero Saarti-trumpets, Markku Veijonsuo, Mikko Mustonen, Pekka Laukkanen-trombones, Mikael Langbacka-bass trombone, Pentti Lahti-alto sax, Jouni Jarvela-alto sax, Teemu Salminen, Olli Ojajarvi-tenor sax, Pertti Paivinen-baritone sax, Seppo Kantonen-piano, Pekka Sarmanto-bass, Markus Ketola-drums, Kirmo Lintinen-dirigent "In Finland, world-class big band jazz is spelled UMO", says All About Jazz. An extraordinary. expressive and lively mix of Finnish folk and modern jazz for over 30 years. The orchestra worked with prominent band leaders like Thad Jones and Gil Evans. "UMO is one of the world’s great jazz orchestras. The key to its succes has been a careful blend of inch-perfect section-work, some genuinely individual solo voices, and a intriguing leaven of guest musicians." (Penguin Jazz Guide).
Sunday 14 may, 9pm, euro 18 SAM RIVERS, JASON MORAN & REGGIE WORKMAN Sam Rivers-tenor sax, soprano sax, flute, Jason Moran-piano, Reggie Workman-bass Jazz giant Sam Rivers continues the tenor tradition in a straight line with his mighty sound and fabulous technique. Opposed to contemporaries John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler, who connected to forgotten jazz, blues and gospel traditions, he represents continuity - Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins. This sublime trio promises interaction on the highest level.
Monday 15 may, 9pm, euro 14 JEWELS & BINOCULARS PLAYS THE MUSIC OF BOB DYLAN MOORE-HORNER-VATCHER Michael Moore-alto sax, clarinet, Lindsey Horner-bass, Michael Vatcher-drums Since over five years, trio Moore-Horner-Vatcher interprets -and recorded on two albums (Ramboy)-the music of Bob Dylan. "The quality of his work has been underestimated but offers a treasure of musical material" says Moore. "Bob Dylan’s focus is on words, messages, and simple melodies that speak to the soul... Stripped of their pop rhythms and vocals, the songs stand on their own as attractive melodies with hooks and nooks. It doesn’t hurt to have the kind of extraordinary talent comprising this trio." (Coda Magazine).

Wednesday 17 may, 8.30pm, euro 14 FINALE DELOITTE JAZZ AWARD with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw led by Henk Meutgeert After violinist Oene van Geel (2002), clarinettist/baritone saxophonist David Kweksilber (2003), clarinettist/saxophonist Joris Roelofs (2004) and bass player Stefan Lievestro a fifth "talent deserving wider recognition" will receive the Deloitte Jazz Award. The winner will be handed over a support sum of 20.000 euro. For this final round, violinist Jeffrey Bruinsma, pianist Robert Rook and guitarist Timucin Sahin have been selected from the highly exciting preliminary rounds. They will perform with the outstanding Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw.
Thursday 18 may, 9pm, euro 14 YURI HONING WIRED PARADISE Presentation CD Temptation Yuri Honing-tenor sax, soprano sax, Frank Moebus-guitar, Tony Overwater-bass guitar, Joost Lijbaart-drums Whether he decorates pop songs or finds a connection with the Arabic traditions, in Yuri Honing’s music you hear intelligence, imagination and a royal tenor sound. In this new "electric" setting, the groove takes a more central position with the addition of guitarist Frank Möbus, well known from the German avant-garde ensemble Der Rote Bereich, also not afraid of some rugged distortion.
Friday 19 may, 9pm, euro 18 ANDREW HILL QUINTET Byron Wallen-trumpet, Jason Yarde-tenor sax, clarinet, Andrew Hill-piano, John Hebert-bass, Eric McPherson-drums Pianist Andrew Hill (Chicago, 1937) created a fascinating musical world on Blue Note in the 60’s, with unorthodox structures and mysterious atmospheres, avant-gardism rooted in tradition. As a composer and highly original piano stylist he is a mentor for a new generation, among which Greg Osby and Jason Moran. With his recent album Time Lines, Hill is back on the illustrious record label and he sounds more vulnerable and is more touching than ever. Don’t miss this concert!

MARTHA MAVROIDI Martha Mavroidi-vocals lafta, Gijs Levelt-trumpet, Ned McGowan-flute, contrabass flute, Pino Basile-frame drums, cupa cupa BOI AKIH DUO Monica Akihari-vocals, Niels Brouwer-guitar WESHM Najib Cherradi-vocals, Floris Dercksen-cello, Jacob Plooij-violin, Bassem Kouri-kanun, Peter van Os-accordion, Sandip Bhattacharya-tabla, Hamid Akhrif-percussion, Michiel van Dijk-saxes The seventh edition of the Karnatic Lab Festival (www.karnaticlab.com) takes place on May 15th, 20th and 25th on three different stages in Amsterdam. During the Bimhuis concert it revolves around vocals. Messing with PVC is created around the extraordinary voice of Martha Mavroidi. Boi Akih’s subtle singing and the evocative compositions of guitarist Brouwer result in literally, boundless improvisation folk. Weshm comes from the Moroccan tradition, ancient Arabian texts and improvisation techniques from East and West with the main goal: a musical trance.
Sunday 21 may, 9pm, euro 12 LOOS ENSEMBLE LOOS PLAYS THE MAGREB Peter J.A. van Bergen-saxes, clarinets, Gerard Bouwhuis-piano, Patricio Wang-bass guitar, Johan Faber-drums, percussion, Camel Zekri-guitar, Mohamed Beldjoudi-darbouka, bendir With a granite and confronting precise percussive sound the group LOOS (founded in 1982 by Peter J.A. van Bergen) developed into one of the most prominent international avant-garde groups. After projects with Jin Hi Kim (Korea) in 1992, Muhammed Fuad Aid (Sudan) en Wria Shekany (Armenia) in 1998, and Atsuhiro Ito (Japan) in 2001, the group presents now ‘LOOS plays the Magreb’ with the famous French-Algerian musicians Camel Zekri and Mohamed Beldjoudi, in which North African rhythms, melodies and structures connect with van Bergen’s percussive, harmonic views.

Wednesday 24 may, 9pm, euro 14 KALMAN BALOGH & THE GIPSY CIMBALOM BAND Kalman Balogh-cimbalom, Peter Bede-alto sax, Mihaly Gyoergy-guitar, Frankie Lato-violin, Ferenc Kovacs-trumpet, violin, Csaba Novak-bass The high spirited swinging gypsy jazz of Kálmán Balogh & The Gipsy Cimbalom Band brought the Bimhuis into a state of ecstasy during the Budapest nights (November 2004). Ragtime, bluegrass, Hot Club de France, klezmer, the group of cimbalom virtuoso Balogh -he comes from an ancient line of renowned Hungarian cimbalom players- has "more influences than a congressman", according to The Beat Magazine, and is "definitly not for the straight-laced".
Thursday 25 may, 9pm, euro 14 CARLA KIHLSTEDT 2 FOOT YARD Carla Kihlstedt-violin, vocals, Marika Hughes-cello, vocals, Shahzad Ismaily-percussion, guitar, electronics People who know Carla Kihlstedt from the Tin Hat Trio know the special things you can expect from her. Emotional intensity in voice and violin, an undefined blend of classical music, art rock and East European influences, a performance that shifts from intimate to rough, and songs that makes you think of Charles Ives, says know critic Paul de Barros. Kihlstedt worked with giants like Tom Waits and John Zorn who brought out the first album of this trio on his Tzadik label.
Friday 26 may, 9pm, euro 14 FRED HERSCH SOLO Presentation CD In Amsterdam: Live at the Bimhuis Fred Hersch-piano Three years ago, the New York pianist Fred Hersch, "one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation" (DownBeat), played two evenings in the Bimhuis. On the first night he performed with Han Bennink and Michael Moore, on the second night he played solo. The recording of this solo concert came out on Palmetto and received outstanding reviews. "Live at the Bimhuis offers a comprehensive portrait of Mr. Hersch’s strengths as a pianist; the supple touch and clarion tone, the inquisitive sense of harmony and rhythm. It’s almost certainly his finest documented solo performance... Superior in almost all regards, the new album makes the case for Mr. Hersch as an artist at the pinnacle of his prowess." (The New York Times). "I think there is a certain un-self-consciousness about the performances on this disc that is extremely difficult for me (or almost anyone) to achieve in a recording studio", says Hersch. "I had one of those magical nights where everything felt right."
Saturday 27 may, 9pm, euro 14 GUTBUCKET Ken Thomson-sax, Ty Citerman-guitar, Eric Rockwin-bass, Paul Chuffo-drums 12pm, gratis DJ PHIL JAZZ LOST AND FOUND Dance till late on hidden treasures & crazy grooves in vintage music. The New York Gutbucket is a "free range" band. Moving between hard rock, Latin, trash, klezmer and jazz, often within a couple of time bars, with an energy that you normally only find in punk music. "There is something smart, sleek and assured about Gutbucket, and when they begin firing on all cylinders it makes for an exhilarating, intelligently performed racket." (The Guardian). "Frantic party music... Ornette Coleman mixed with a rock band." (The New York Times).
Sunday 28 may, 2.30pm, euro 8 (under 16 year euro 4) JAZZMANIA BIG BAND led by Peter Guidi support: JAZZ JUNIORS This highly active 18-piece formation containing many young talents represents the top level of the Jazz Department of the Amsterdam Music School. For numerous years in a row, this band, performing originals, classic and contemporary big band repertoire, won the first prize in the Dutch Big Band Competition. The Jazz Juniors will support de band.
Sunday 28 may, 9pm, euro 14 JOEY BARON SOLO Joey Baron-drums "I’m primarily interested in making what I do inviting and fun. I’m not trying to impress people with how good I can play the drums or displaying my virtuosity as my main thing." Joey Baron stands for endless creativity and fun. In groups of John Zorn, Bill Frisell and with veterans like Lee konitz and Jim Hall he uses his magic to create unique melodic subtleties with his drums. Just like in 1990 Baron will enter the Bimhuis stage for a solo concert.
Monday 29 may, 9pm, gratis 1000 YEARS OF JAZZ LAPTOP/TURNTABLE SESSION At the laptop/turntable session "1000 years of Jazz", the Dox Orchestra (in which you will recognize the members of SfeQ) will accompany various guests. Musicians, "turntablists" and "musicians in between" can apply at info@doxrecords.com (every last Monday of the month). Next to the band line up and the instruments of musicians dropping in, there are computers available for anyone who brings audio and/or any other files. Laptop deejays can plug into the central mixing board.

Wednesday 31 may, 9pm, euro 14 YOUNG ALL STARS QUINTET Presentation CD Young All Stars Quintet Ben van Gelder-alto sax, Rik Mol-trumpet, Gideon van Gelder-piano, Clemens van der Feen-bass, Flin van Hemmen-drums In spite of there young ages you will find a big trophy-cabinet on stage: best soloist in the Dutch Jazz Competition 2004 (Flin van Hemmen), the American Stan Getz-Clifford Brown Award (Ben van Gelder), just to mention a few. Their résumés are also highly impressive, Clemens van Feen was invited to play with Ernst Glerum’s group, Gideon van Gelder was asked by Benjamin Herman and Rik Mol by Yuri Honing.
