MARC COPLAND TRIO
Tour: 7th - 24th March 2003
For some years now, New York pianist Marc Copland has been a regular participant in European jazzclubs and festivals. His music, however, is far from regular. This "King of Harmony" (Tribuna da Imprensa/Brazil), is known for his unique original compositions as well as his unusual arrangements, which bring overplayed "dead" standards back to life. Copland is not the flashy technician, who tries to impress the listener from the first note. Rather, at the end of his performance, the listener gets the entire picture: a new chord change here, an unexpected note there, some surprising changes of tempi. All this makes for great music, or as JazzIz (USA) put it: "a classic".
This spring, Marc Copland brings a fantastic trio with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Joachim Rückert to Europe. This trio, working regularly every Monday night in New York, has become the talk of the town, and his new release "Softly ..." has been nominated as one of the ten best CD‘s of 1998 by JazzIz magazine (USA) and Tribuna da Imprensa (Brazil).
MARC COPLAND began his career as saxophonist at the early seventies with (among others) Chico Hamilton and John Abercrombie, but then retired from performing to develop his abilities as a pianist. He re-emerged in the eighties as leader of his own trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Billy Hart, as well as music-director and pianist for the legendary James Moody. In 1996 Copland signed with the Denon Records, which released "Stompin‘ with Savoy" (with Randy Brecker, Bob Berg, James Genus and Dennis Chambers). He is noted for his coloristic approach to harmony and unique touch at the piano. His next two Denon releases "Second Look" and "Softly ..." earned him critical accolades, and a fourth album is planned.
DREW GRESS is regarded as a star of the NYC jazz-scene. In addition to Copland he works regularly with Simon Nabatov, Fred Hersch, Don Byron And Tim Berne. Gress, a sympathetic accompanist, is noted for his warm tone and his ability to play chords as well as lines on his instrument. He is a Soul Note recording artist. His current release, "Heyday", features his band "Jagged Sky".
JOACHIM RÜCKERT is a great talent and belongs in Germany to the leading musicians of the young generation like Nils Wogram. He fascinates with his both rhythmical feeling and his mature musical understanding.
