Rhodri Davies - EKKO
Davies has been described as the most radical of harp players in the field of improvised music. He is not only active in the field of improvisation but also in contemporary composition and installations and performance art. The music he is playing tonight will be improvisations around the material offered on Davies' latest solo harp release wound response. It is loud, distorted and forms an attempt to work with rhythm and pitches in an open and fluid way. As the Wire magazine wrote:“The sound is hellish but engaging – there’s a splash of Velvet Underground, or an echo of Congolese group Konono No1, with their thumb pianos cranked through jerry-rigged megaphones…Each track ends drenched in a squeal of feedback, gasping for breath before diving back in.”

PUMPORGAN - EKKO
“Imagine how it feels to play a pump organ. Playing it is a rather intense job. You have to keep pumping the air whilst trying to impress with musical stunts. Well, this is even more the case with playing in the band Pumporgan! We call our music Psychojive, which means keeping the pulse pumping whilst playing musical constructions that make your brain ache. Your body wants to move while your brain is short-circuiting. It's the new therapy for lethargy! And Pumporgan is ready for mass treatment. Pumporgan is a recently erected band playing a blend of stompin' jive music with dissonant art rock and free jazz. Imagine where rock 'n roll and rhythm and blues would have ended up had they evolved in a progressive way and still kept their rough and edgy sound. The music is wild, fast and overwhelming, pushing the players to their limits. The group leads you through crazy architecture where one would easily go astray. A large part of the repertoire has been written as a composition commission for the North Sea Jazz festival edition 2011”.
Jeroen Kimman- guitar, bass guitar, Wilbert Bulsink- hammond organ, Christian Ferlaino - baritone sax, Dirk Bruinsma- alto sax, bass guitar, compositions, Nout Ingen Housz - drums, percussion, Ron Ruiten - sound.
Preview The Ex 33 1/3 Festival in association with Bimhuis - Huis ad Werf
Since 1979 The Ex has been operating beyond categorization. Born out of the punk explosion, when anything and everything was possible, the band have still managed to retain both curiosity and passion for their music. Using guitars, bass, drums and voice as departure points The Ex has continued up to the present day to musically explore undiscovered areas: the early 1980s saw collaborations with jazz musicians and an Iraki-Kurdish band. In the 90s the group have found a myriad of partners from varied musical and non musical backgrounds including Kamagurka, Tom Cora, Sonic Youth, Han Bennink, Ab Baars and Wolter Wierbos. In 2002 The Ex set up a lively musical exchange with Ethiopia, which eventually led to two CD recordings and hundreds of concerts with the legendary saxophonist Getatchew Mekuria. After 33 1/3 years, more than 25 albums and around 1800 performances the band continues to work as they did in when they began, completely independent without record companies, managers or roadies. Because of this 'do it yourself" work ethic The Ex is still a great example for other forward-thinking bands and musicians. The Ex even had a part in the foundation of Rumor. Rumor has it that we owe the name "Rumor" to Terrie. Tonight, at the Rumor Festival, you will get a taste of The Ex 33 1/3 Festival taking place at the Bimhuis on 21 and 22 December.
