Info
For me, Lochs-Balthaus-Herskedal creates a sound in which not only milk and honey flow, but lemons also bloom. The band’s songs are so nutritious and digestible, to the very last track, that they are more than just small snacks on the way to continents and ages. North and South, East and West cannot be simply identified on their musical compass. The chemistry is simply in tune between the musicians, in every note and at every tempo. The basic recipe of these well-rehearsed musicians consists of the secure foundation of jazz connotations by the German pianist Dirk Balthaus, who lives in Amsterdam, and the extensive insertions from both of the other protagonists, the Dutch trumpeter Bert Lochs and the tubist Daniel Herskedal, who hails from Norway.
A very good example is at the very beginning, the cooperation in the funky heartbeat of the opener, “Zany,” between the airy-playful horns and the Tatum-like keyboards. The whole is filled and garnished with high-quality (world) musical statements. The general ingredients are natural and stem from the most differing corners of the world. The only identifiable “artificial flavor enhancers” are a secretive Fender Rhodes (“The Night, the Light and the Waves”) and some echo on the individual instruments. Everything else is “hand-made”: the wistful optimism of the wonderful melodies (“Where is the Snow”), the incision of the harmonic accents and the bite of the rhythmic impulses (“B-Tango”). By including the melodiously lamenting clarinet of the excellently integrated guest, Michael Moore, the trio shows its diversity: italo-slavonic-nordic La Banda brass mourning rhythms (“De Sluwe Heks”) side up with gospel and blues variations with the driving swing of the tuba and rolling piano (“Choices).
When needed, a pinch of classic and Nino Rota (“Julesangen”) is added on the top. Here and there it’s all rounded off with spicy free jazz or driving Afrogrooves (“Condition Humaine”). The clarity of the musical gestures and thoughts are impressive – from the three (or four) instrumentalists, whether it be animalistic onomatopoeia and didgeridoo sounds of the tuba, percussive attacks from the inside of the piano or the “secret” triad from Herb Albert, Don Cherry and Kenny Wheeler with pedal tones and high notes (“Is it Me”) in the horn.
The three make it work by magically mixing all their creative components. Here I find Baroque and Bartok, Monk and Silver. In emerging images, I hear the streets of Buenos Aires, Belgrade and New Orleans, sense the heat of Sicily and the cold wind of the Lofoten. Everything sounds virtuous and playful, well dosed and intensive, multi-voiced and catchy all at the same time. This mix of jazz styles is organic wholefood instead of commercialized pabulum. Yeah!

Live Reviews
“Lots of personal and spontaneous freedom in shaping the music, they sound mostly soft and balladic. This is a creative
band that enriches the jazz scene with its inspiring contribution.”
Landeszeitung
“... no percussion instruments, obviously – and nobody longing for virtuosic rolls and drumming because this trio swings passionately....’
‘…they seem to embrace the modern adage “less is more” and succeed in sounding very authentic. Effortlessly, they made an
unforgettable impression on the listening audience.”
Michiel van Ree
CD Reviews: Choices (2012)
The interaction in this trio is on an exceptionally high level …. We know the band’s sound from the first CD, and this new meeting
is an enjoyment from one end to the other.
Jazznytt/N
The music is contemporary and distinctive, not only because of the unusual line up.
Jazzenzo/NL
The ensemble carefully chooses pretty melodies and delivers them with beauty.
Jazzflits/NL
It is bright, honest and charming music with particular colorings. Beside the openness and rhythmic liveliness, the music is
permeated by a solemnity that connects heavenly and earthy spheres.
Written Music/NL
Lyrical, melodic and full of subtle twists.
